Spare by Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Discover the global phenomenon that tells an unforgettable story of love, loss, and healing.

“Compellingly artful . . . [a] blockbuster memoir.”—The New Yorker (Best Books of the Year)

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

For Harry, this is that story at last.

Before losing his mother, twelve-year-old Prince Harry was known as the carefree one, the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. Grief changed everything. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness—and, because he blamed the press for his mother’s death, he struggled to accept life in the spotlight.

At twenty-one, he joined the British Army. The discipline gave him structure, and two combat tours made him a hero at home. But he soon felt more lost than ever, suffering from post-traumatic stress and prone to crippling panic attacks. Above all, he couldn’t find true love.

Then he met Meghan. The world was swept away by the couple’s cinematic romance and rejoiced in their fairy-tale wedding. But from the beginning, Harry and Meghan were preyed upon by the press, subjected to waves of abuse, racism, and lies. Watching his wife suffer, their safety and mental health at risk, Harry saw no other way to prevent the tragedy of history repeating itself but to flee his mother country. Over the centuries, leaving the Royal Family was an act few had dared. The last to try, in fact, had been his mother. . . .

For the first time, Prince Harry tells his own story, chronicling his journey with raw, unflinching honesty. A landmark publication, Spare is full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.

Not very good. I admire Harry and his life, but this was kind a of a let down.

An honest and engaging read. Thank you for sharing your story. Making hard choices to protect your family and your peace. I appreciated your honesty.

Spare. Thank you for sharing your life and thoughts. But most of all for setting the record straight and correcting the misconceptions.

Wow. I know there are three sides to every story, but wow.

Enjoyed it greatly. I enjoyed reading this book. So many times, I didn’t want to put it down. I liked the stories about his life’s events, and honest insights to his feelings. There is no doubt about the nightmare he had with the Press, as did his mother and wife. I can understand him being upset with some of the Royal family and the way they handled the press and him marrying Meg. This was also tragic. Such a beautiful and honest sharing of a part of his life and an explanation of why they left that life. I hope in time he writes another.

Raw Honesty. I will admit that I originally bought this book for purely selfish reasons. The controversies and “hot takes” peaked my interest, but now that I have read it all the way to completion, I now feel like I understand Prince Harry better. However much you may disagree with him, I truly believe that this is the most honest portrayal of a person blessed with privilege, but also someone who suffered for it. I can’t imagine living my whole life in a gilded cage where everything I say or do from the moment I’m born, every stomp, every cry, every yell, could be open to interpretation from a group of people salivating at seeing you fall. I can never look at a piece of British media about the Royals without wondering what were the intentions behind their articles and hit pieces. It’s disgusting. I am an American, and I am very much an anti-monarchist, but don’t we also do the same to our American celebrities?? All of it needs to stop.

An amazing, moving, sad and eye open account of his life and the inner functioning of the monarch.. An amazing, moving, sad and eye open account of his life and the inner functioning of the monarch.

I feel privileged to have read this wonderful Story. The book kept getting better and better as I read. I was touched and felt honored to share Prince Harry’s story. In the end, t was a beautiful love story. Maybe someday I will have the honor of meeting both Harry and Meg

Honesty and Bravery. I am so happy Harry is living his life his way. Diana only wanted the same thing. She would be so proud of him.

Not as bad as I thought it would be. Good ghost writer. The story, well, it’s the same ole same ole. No surprise.

Loved it. Harry's whole life story in one book. You really see him as the protagonist of the royal family and I believe it! To read about his struggles with his mother’s tragic demise and years later finally accepting her death and eventually seeing signs that she’s watching over him and his sweet family today... just perfect. So well done. Wishing him and Meg all the best in their new lives together “living the life his mum always wanted.” Can’t wait for a sequel!

About Love. This memoir is about a real life prince’s life, but at its heart, it’s a love story. It’s about the yearning for love, the hidden struggle to come to terms with brokenness, working through the fear and cutting blade of unworthiness, and then finding that one person who, incredibly, is the healing salve the heart and body needs. And this is what elevates this memoir—Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are fully humanized. I truly pray for them to make it together to the end.

Welcome to America!. After reading bits n pieces in the news. I wanted to read his truth. His Mummy would be proud. After the way the monarchy treated Princess Diana; it’s no surprise they did the same to Harry and Meghan. His war experience seems to have been forgotten by all Brits. For them to strip him of his military status - he served, earned, and lived to tell of his experience. I think anyone who serves or served in active combat would be helped by Harry’s experience. And his recovery. The monarchy ended with Queen Elizabeth. Camilla will never be thought of as a queen. Nor should she be. Funny how a King had to give up his throne to marry a divorcee. But an adulterer can be king with the one he cheated with being queen? The way Harry has been treated is deplorable. Shame on Willy and Kate for not being there for him. Willy and Kate come off as snobby and entitled. Seem very distant to the common folk. Willy may resemble his mom. But filled with his dad. By Harry trying to be there for his royal family speaks loudly of his love for them and his country. Even after he was abandoned by them. I don’t think I could do the same. No one should blame Meghan for any of this. The monarchy was not supportive of Harry long before he met her. As for the monarchy cutting costs. Are they cutting taxes as well? Welcome to America Harry. Land of the free because of the brave!

And exceptionally good read. From beginning to end, it was an interesting experience to be able to see the difference between living a life of royalty and the common man. To see what a privileged life entails was eye-opening. To see the brutality of the British press was astounding. This story makes me appreciate my simple life.

Great book. Brave soul to protect his family and so sad the Palace did not stand up against racism. I hope he knows he did the right thing. Unbelievable how they were thrown to the wolves. Great Book.

THE SPARE—EXCEPTIONAL. An exceptional read & well written. Made me think twice about the British royalty & how they can be so complicit. Loved reading this novel about a man who’s no longer a ‘spare’ but a wonderful husband & father to his two children.

Very entertaining !!!. I was expecting to read quite a bit of gossip and I wrongly expected that there would be some disparaging of members of the royal family but there was none. A classy book authored by a man of substance and class. I wish for nothing but the best for this small family and hope that you enjoy life here in the “States.”

Read this now. As a mom of two young kids I haven’t read an “adult” book in years but I bought this out of my curiosity for all things royalty. I laughed, I cried. It was beautifully written, raw and so interesting. I’m so glad the Spare decided to share.

harry is a terrorist pig. poorly written and boring in many parts. harry’s lack of reflection on waging war in the middle east is astounding. reading about him lamenting the fact that he couldn’t go to iraq, while knowing that the war was built on a lie was disgusting. he talked about being called the dumb one in this book, but I find i agree with that assumption. LOSER

Enjoyed his perspective. Genuinely appreciate reading the perspective of a young man who has grown up under the pressure of the spotlight, lost his mother, and simply wanted to find his own way like so many of us out there.

How sad it is to be royalty. Hard to emphasize with someone that has more privilege and money then 99 percent of the rest of us.

Great. Good read

Wonderful memoir. What a life! Well lived, poignantly told. You can actually FEEL his love for Meghan. I wish them a wonderful, happy life.

Wa. Aaawqwwqwwwww wa ea

tried to read… BORiNg!. not worth the 17.99 i paid for it as i couldn’t bring myself to finish. Not only is it’s boring, he complains about how hard his life is when he has every single advantage a person could hope for. I feel gross for spending what little money i get from kidney failure disability payments hoping to get a little joy from a book. I should be refunded.

Love it 🥰. Great read! I love the Truth! Have a continued wonderful life. “Kindness is the Key”. Dr Senghor, 🌹🌹🌹🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿

Honest and True. Prince Harry’s story is emotional, powerful and courageous.

Such respect for the truth!. Found it refreshing to read the truth - praying for peace for him and his precious family!

Spare. Good read. . Hope they find peace.

Awesome book!. Amazing read!

Terrible Cry about privilege. How this book is even on the NYT shows a bunch of corporations bought this book and paid for reviews. Over this clown and bozo wife

Best wishes from Shartlesville Pa. Well after reading I will never read a tabloid again. This is the worst nightmare. Harry I wish you and your family forever happiness, safety, love and respect !!! Hang in there

Harry, not the spare but a man with integrity. Loved your book. Loved your mother Glad you learned from your mother and kept your family safe. You got out of that toxic environment. Cheers to you and Meg. Love her also.

LOVED. I loved this book so much! I read it again after finishing it. His journey is beautiful and their love story even more so!

An expats view. To Prince Harry and Meg thank you for sharing your story. It was so brave and so inspiring. The incredible heartache you have experienced but the joy of finding each other and the ultimate joy of becoming a real family.

Great Read!. Very well written! You can feel the pain, sadness and joy. Gives a better understanding of the monarchy today. Loved it, was hard to put down.

Odyssey of time. Riveting, poignant, and a wonderful adventure to read. I felt like peeking into a secret world, and discovering a plethora of emotions that opens like a Pandora’s box. The ending felt like I am that hummingbird, coming to and end of my odyssey. Time cures everything, so I wish him peace and contentment in due time.

Couldn’t put it down. I have a hard time sitting still to read but I couldn’t put this book down. Being born in England not long after Prince William and having been told about people asking my mother if she was in the contest to have her baby the same day as Lady Diana, I’ve always had a small connection to the princes having grown up in the same era but experienced life in a completely different way. Princess Diana’s death was announced on my 15th birthday. I was shocked to hear many details, sad, but hopeful that Prince Harry and Meghan will have a much more peaceful story now.

Rare insight and honesty. So grateful for the Duke of Sussex to have wanted to set the record straight, and to share a large part of himself in the process. I will not ever take the news regarding the Sussexes as truth again, unless it is validly from them. May your life be happy and as uncomplicated as possible.

Illuminating. How nice to read a true account of British royal life. It was very eye opening. I admire Harry’s bravery, both on the battlegrounds and in sharing his heart. Bravo, Harry!

Loved it. Amazing read

Happy prince. Hope he is happy with his new life.

Devastating.. Hard to find fault with Harry after hearing his life story. God speed and peace to him and Meg.

Great read. Long but worth the read!

He’s no Spare to me. The courage it took to write this, the beauty in which he did it, his transparency on sharing the contents of his life and so much more made me give this 5 stars. I loved every page of this book.

Truth shall set you free. I wasn’t sure what to expect, with all of the hype in the press. The Royal Family is put on a pedestal but actually is just as disfunctional as everyone else’s. However, this tragic, powerful road to happiness is told from a touchingly sensitive perspective and profound insight. It was an incredible journey. Most of all Harold (Harry/Haz), I believe you! Keep them safe and grow old together is my prayer for you and your family.

Spare. One of the most raw and honest memoirs I’ve ever read. Thank you Harry for telling your very important story

Spare. This is a truly heartfelt , not sugar coated , and told in Harry’s own words. I loved this book and it gave me an even greater respect for this man and his family !! I wish many blessing. On this entire family !!

Spare - I think not. This is a must read. You get to know Harry so much deeper than what any rag mag has to say about him. He is the most honest and the only truth bearer in the most dysfunctional family on the planet.

Review from GG. Nice to hear words that come directly from the person that survived the turmoil. Unfortunate that the world doesn’t understand “live and let live”.
