Per settecento anni, dall'XI al XVIII secolo, papi e vescovi hanno rivolto accorati richiami ai credenti perché, nel nome della croce, andassero a combattere contro gli infedeli, che si trattasse degli ultimi pagani d'Europa in Livonia, degli eretici in Francia e Boemia, dei maomettani in Spagna e nel vicino Oriente. Quasi sempre questi appelli suscitarono entusiasmo e consensi, con una larga partecipazione di nobili, cavalieri e gente comune. Diversi furono i fattori che indussero migliaia di uomini ad affrontare pericoli e fatiche, e spesso la morte, in terre lontane e inospitali: lo slancio religioso che faceva della crociata un pellegrinaggio armato; la natura penitenziale di molte crociate e quindi il loro significato salvifico; i vantaggi materiali garantiti dalle indulgenze; lo spirito di avventura e di conquista; la precarietà delle condizioni economiche in patria.
Sulla base di una ricchissima documentazione, in questo volume Riley-Smith illustra non soltanto le motivazioni politiche, economiche e generazionali di scelte tanto difficili, ma anche l'acceso dibattito teologico sulla liceità dell'uso della forza per un cristiano.
