The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon Book Summary

GMA BOOK CLUB PICK • AN NPR BOOK OF THE YEAR • From the New York Times bestselling author of I Was Anastasia and Code Name Hélène comes a gripping historical mystery inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard, a renowned 18th-century midwife who defied the legal system and wrote herself into American history.

"Fans of Outlander’s Claire Fraser will enjoy Lawhon’s Martha, who is brave and outspoken when it comes to protecting the innocent. . . impressive."—The Washington Post

"Once again, Lawhon works storytelling magic with a real-life heroine." —People Magazine

Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion, declaring the death to be an accident, Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own.

Over the course of one winter, as the trial nears, and whispers and prejudices mount, Martha doggedly pursues the truth. Her diary soon lands at the center of the scandal, implicating those she loves, and compelling Martha to decide where her own loyalties lie.

Clever, layered, and subversive, Ariel Lawhon’s newest offering introduces an unsung heroine who refused to accept anything less than justice at a time when women were considered best seen and not heard. The Frozen River is a thrilling, tense, and tender story about a remarkable woman who left an unparalleled legacy yet remains nearly forgotten to this day.

Great read. Really enjoyed this book, wonderful storytelling .

Very enjoyable. Good writing, good character, good story. It was interesting to get a glimpse of like in the late 1790s.

Great Read. I take care of women in my profession as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner….this was a great read!!

Love the cover!. I loved this book! One of my top 3 for 2023. Maybe because I spent 3 years In a small town on the Kennebec river And found the geography and physical place so believable. Maybe because I have a deep fascination With historical novels set in the 1700s And found her research believable. Maybe because I have been involved in a midwifery community and again- she nailed it. Maybe because I am a mother of grown children… and on and on. It’s a well crafted book- with a dynamite Storyline! Read it! It’s great!

Great read. Very well writtenand interesting. It offers a great perspective of what life was like and the turmoils faced, specifically by women. I couldn’t put it down-best book I’ve read in a while.

Excellent. This is a special book in that it gives insight into America’s early beginnings as well as the role of one brilliant woman.

Must read!. This based-on-a-true-story tale of midwife Martha Ballard touched my heart. It is a testament to the power of women, at a time when that was hard to come by. A tidy murder mystery, but the real story is of Martha and her life. I loved every page.

The Frozen River. Very well written. Good story, well worth the time to read it.

The Frozen River. This is an outstanding historical novel!! I felt like I was living in the 18th century America! The main character and her husband are such great citizens who made America the awesome democracy filled with honest, intelligent, compassionate people!! I greatly enjoyed reading this from beginning to end!!

Frozen River. I loved this book and couldn’t put it down! Martha Ballard is a rare and wonderful woman, wife, mother, friend and midwife!! I want to go back in time and be her friend! Thank you for bringing her life to our attention. She will remain with me for a long time in my memories of a courageous, intelligent, compassionate and loving wife, mother and midwife!

Strong Female Character. I couldn’t put this book down. It is a murder mystery, historical novel, and love story. A realistic depiction of the legal system and lack of rights for women in colonial times. I was sad to be done reading this one.

Midwife life on frozen river. I really love this book. It’s one that kept me up at night reading. The main character, Martha, is based on a real midwife from the 18th century and her life by a river in Maine. All the characters are well written. The mystery thrown in is fascinating. The historical accuracy of life as a woman in early America is insightful. How the river made , sustained and sometimes broke the lives along it is illuminating. Great story, wish it didn’t have to end.
