All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr Book Summary

*NOW A NETFLIX LIMITED SERIES—from producer and director Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) starring Mark Ruffalo, Hugh Laurie, and newcomer Aria Mia Loberti*

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, the beloved instant New York Times bestseller and New York Times Book Review Top 10 Book about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris, and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the Resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge.

Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. So well written can’t wait for the show!!

Couldn’t put it down. This book has everything from love, adventure, and heartbreak spun into one amazing story!

Good, but not until the end. This book was interesting and formatted different than other books. Bounced around most of the book except for the end. Both main characters were influential in each other’s lives. The story line was well thought-out.

Beautiful. What a great book!

Nice stpry. Nice story however it did become predictable and redundant towards the end.

Unique storyline. Interesting twist on the storyline from the perspective of both German and French sides. I agree with other reviews that it was often hard to follow the timelines and often found myself having to re-read chapters to make sure I understood. Will make for a beautiful movie.

Beautifully written. If you like books like the book thief, the kite runner, where the crawdads sing, this one is for you. Beautifully written

Mesmerizing…. A worthwhile read and a rapturous tale.

Ugh!. I loved the characters! I wished the story flowed better or differently. It was difficult to read because of the changing timelines. This is a heartbreaking story!!

The Best Book. This is among my favorite books ever written. After reading Cloud Cuckoo Land, I read the Memory Wall and then re-read this. I’ve no doubt I will read it again sometime in future. It completely draws me in. I especially enjoy reading his work on my electronic device, so I have immediate access to on-line materials including dictionaries (his command of the languages is exquisite and nuanced). I am grateful to Mr. Doerr.

All the light we cannot see. A long and sad telling of such a horrific event. This book was very “wordy” with a lot of historical and geographical details that all led to an awful ending that was probably all too often true of war. Sad nonetheless. Not a pleasant journey for me.

Slow and disjointed. Horribly slow to develop. I didn’t like bouncing between stories.

Great book and beautiful story. Really loved reading this book. Great story and very interesting to see the world from the perspective of a blind girl.

Tried four times over the years can’t finish. Boring and unfocused, I wanted to finish it but life is too short.

Best book I’ve read in 10 years. Can’t say enough about how good this novel is.

I couldn’t put it down. I blew through this book in a day because I couldn’t bring myself to stop. An absolute masterpiece that everyone should read

A masterpiece of connection. There is a great deal that I like about this book and Doerr’s other novels, but two things particularly stand out: Doerr connects his characters through time, space, ideas, books, common passions and war. Their connection drives the story and it’s suspense. And in this novel and “Cuckoo”, it is the children who navigate the cyclone of moral dilemmas set upon them by the adult world. Also, much of the best imagery and insight is related from a child’s perspective which gives it an undeniable freshness and transcendence.

All the Light We Cannot See. What an incredible story! 5 stars! I loved it! WWII was a big thing with so many different aspects. The author did well at tying them together, I thought.

Love. Simply Amazing

Worth Every Minute. Excellent story providing insight into the horrors of war from many perspectives while celebrating the light that survives even the darkest moments. There are no winners in war but good will prevail over the long haul. To believe otherwise is to give up.

Beautiful. Loved every second

Riveting, happy, sad, intriguing story!. The story spans the years around WWII and how various characters survived. You can watch children grow and mature, letting their imaginations loose in your mind. The pictures in my head will be there for a very long time, as if they are memories of my own. Wonderful book, hard to put down!

Didn’t want it to end.. I absolutely loved this book.

Brilliant work. The author set up the story at the time of WWII, and a little known small town St Malon in France. The creation of this novel around a blind girl Marie, a diamond, and a German soldier who was listening to Marie’ s uncle radio broadcasting of love and truth. Actually this radio was used as communication of local resistance. The whole story is intriguing which makes me cannot stop reading in one breath.

Deeply Satisfying — Better when Shared. Read it to someone you love.. Beautiful prose. Haunting characters. Intricate and well-constructed plot. I’ll be thinking about these places and people for a long time.

Superb. Excellent book. Read it. Highly moving and important.

All The Light We Cannot See. I am a black and white thinker. I’m trying to see gray. This book perfectly nuances all it means to be human. It offers a honest perspective from every side. This is one of those books that can change you. If you let it. I will read it again in a few years. Just brilliant.

All the light we cannot see. This was an excellent book well written historically accurate and I couldn’t put it down thank you James or Appleton Junior MD

Good but long. This book was not as entertaining as I thought it would be based on the reviews and Pulitzer Prize. At times, it was very hard to follow and there were so many unanswered questions and story lines. I’m sure that was intentional but it frustrated me. I still gave it 3 stars because the writing was incredible. However, it didn’t need to be so long either. The author dragged out many scenarios using great literary techniques but it didn’t add much to the storylines.

All the light we cannot see. It was a fascinating intertwined story of love life and the hardships of war I truly loved this book as I loved all his others

Powerful story. This will teach you so much about history. Read the book before you watch the movie on Netflix. The book will be better for sure.

Stunning Novel. What Anthony Doerr achieves with his novel “All the Light We Cannot See” is a beautifully written story of the way human lives can intertwine. In a story that is filled with friendships, tragedy and heartwarming, yet heartbreaking suspense you will not be disappointed. It deals with the haunting of the daily lives of wartime from the perspective of the citizens and the soldiers. I greatly appreciate the story that Doerr puts forth while also recognizing the wreckage that was World War Two.

The last paragraph! Splendid!. The title captured me and reading with an open mind, a piece of art in written prose. Bravo!

Excelente Libro e Historia de la segunda Guerra Mundial. Intensa Lectura,

War and Love. Great convoluted story

Loved it. Loved the way this boom is written. The book jumps around but it’s easy to follow. Couldn’t put it down.

Very black story. Could not finish it.. This just kept getting more and more depressing and I finally had to put it down. Maybe it ended on a high note but not willing to endure any more

Great book!. Loved it.

ALL THE LIGHT WE CA NOT SEE. EVEN BETTER THAN THE REVIEWS

A shameful degradation of blind women. A shameful degradation of blind women and girls. No excuses after all the progress that has been made. Are there wholesome people who really think that blind girls and women who have everything else going for them except their eyesight need to be bathed by their daddies? Is it really possible that in the 21st-century, we could imagine such horrific misinformation coming out of World War II? I lived in Germany and spoke with elderly blind women. There was nothing like this in what they described. A book like this could give a pervert excuses in handling someone who isn’t sighted. Is it really what it looks like, that an author with a lot of other books in tow can then squirt out a quagmire and call it a Rose Garden?

What was the point?. Life and how disappointing?

The Light We Cannot See. I bought this book based on some very prominent reviews. Big Mistake. Just four hours into the reading of it, I’m done. Way too slow moving, depressing and boring.

All the Light we cannot see. Beautifully written, but for me the story just was not all that new. The characters were cliche and boring.

Well Written. A well written story. I enjoyed reading this book.

Need to read. This book is amazing and you must read it! The chapters are quick and different character POVs keep it interesting. Great insights as well on WW2 and how many lives were affected and claimed.

I miss these characters already. Such a great journey.

Beautiful. Beautiful wonderful book

Keeping hope alive. Vivid storytelling combined with a story structure built like a pyramid to take the reader to a level of comprehension only possible in the very best fiction. Doerr mixes the most beautiful and grotesque of human behavior together without losing the message that we should all keep hope alive.

READ THIS BOOK!!!!. Omg. Still sobbing. This is a book I see myself coming back to for years to come. Seriously, get this book

Difficult to plow through. There are so many and so many descriptions throughout this book that the story and characters get lost. To make it more confusing the author jumps back and forth though different time frames, which really do not add to the story or its telling. And then: the two main characters are together for less than a day and one of them gets killed! I waded through all of this for a terrible ending! And then the stone is mysteriously somewhere! Good grief. So bad.

Superbly written. I first saw the video series on Netflix, was drawn in but found the ending hokey and disappointing. Bought the book right afterwards, was drawn in more deeply by the excellent and evocative writing. The sympathetic characters are more convincing and nuanced, as are some of the “villains” in the movie. The ending(s) are believable and nuanced in ways that the Netflix series wasn’t. Both treatments drew me in, but the book even more.

Could not stop reading. Very well written with most compelling characters. Historical background story is very accurate. Highly recommended (I see Tom Hanks in the role of Etienne ;=) )

Amazing book. Hard to define the category. A wonderful book that combines suspense, mystery, romance, tragedy set in a backdrop of rapidly changing history. Characters that live on after you close the book and a story that you don't want to end. One of the best books I have ever read.

Crap. A pale, vapid imitation of Hemingway that co-opts both times and places with which the author is unfamiliar, and is original only in the extent of its aesthetic redundancy on a literary stage replete with such works

Fantastic !. The only person who can see the light is blind and all the other characters stumble through in anguish and turmoil. Could not stop reading. Loved it from cover to cover.

If I could. All The Light We Cannot See, is, as it's title suggests, purely made of magic. The story, the characters are so unassuming they will absorb you (and all your time) in a Carol Shields esque trap. Just one more sentence, paragraph, chapter, until you smile and realize your far down this rabbit hole that you have no desire to come back up. Almost every sentence is a reduction, a photograph made of poetry and still finds traction in historical accuracy; so is it an extended poem, a beautiful work of historical fiction? It finds a balance between both, very real and effortlessly enchanting. Not to compare, never to compare, but it is The Fabulous Life of Amelie entwined with The Piano and spiced with a dash of Luka and The Fire Of Life. If I could I would use the same entwining of poetry prose and verbal photography to capture and describe the elegance of this book but then if I could I would have written it. If I could....

All the Light We Cannot See. This book is incredibly well written, a masterpiece, a work of art. A must read!

Amazing. This book is truly amazing. The amount of detail bring the story to life and you become so involved with the lives of the characters. Really gives you a beautiful look at the nature of people and the brutality of the war.

So very good.... I’m not good with words… I just couldn’t resist putting a 5-star rating here so that people might choose this wonderful book ahead of another one. It’s so worth the time.
