The Ball at Versailles by Danielle Steel Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Four American debutantes attend a renowned Paris cotillion in Danielle Steel’s captivating new novel.

It’s the summer of 1959 and the Palace of Versailles is hosting an event that will make history. It is an exclusive dusk-to-dawn ball in which a select group of American and French debutantes will be presented to international society and royalty. Four young women, all with something to prove, receive what some see as the invitation of a lifetime.

Amelia Alexander, who hopes to eventually attend law school, hesitates to participate in what she sees as an archaic and privileged tradition. But her indomitable widowed mother, Jane, who’s struggled financially and sacrificed for a career, encourages her to attend. Jane would do anything for Amelia to have the chance at a happily ever after.

Felicity Smith is equally uncertain about the ball. Although her family is prominent in the Dallas social scene, Felicity prefers to keep to herself, avoiding the older sister who torments her. But to get out of her sister’s shadow, Felicity decides to accept. If it’s a success, the tables will have turned at last.

For Caroline Taylor, the beautiful ingénue and daughter of Hollywood legends, the ball is an irresistible opportunity. But an unexpected heartbreak just before she leaves for France gets things off to a bad start.

Then there’s Samantha Walker, an art history major with an overprotective father. Her excitement about the invitation is overshadowed by the emotional and physical effects of a past tragedy that still haunts her.

For all these young women, Paris and one transcendent night will change their lives forever. Bestselling author Danielle Steel extends an invitation to all, in The Ball at Versailles.

Enjoyable read. The title of the book lead you to the plot. It was a typical love story. I cannot say it was one of Danielle Steels best book but a good read for sure.

Romance at its best. 4 college students became friends and found love along the way . It all started and stemmed from a magical night in Versailles .

Boring. This was so boring to read, I skimmed through pages just so I can get to the end. The debutant ball is an old tradition for wealthy people to introduce their spoiled daughters to society, in hopes of finding a rich husband for them. The characters seemed childish and the storyline unrealistic. I finished the book because I was hoping it would get better and the price for the book wasn’t worth reading.

Engaging & Captivating!. Loved reading the engaging and captivating story by the best selling author, Danielle Steel. When Felicity, Caroline, Samantha, and Amelia go to the Ball at Versailles, they all have an unforgettable night. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written, and riveting story of four young American debutantes attending a cotillion at the Palace of Versailles.

Painful. I’m only a few pages in but the cumbersome backstory is so dull and goes on and on like a terrible journal entry. Am not expecting to make it far… the writing is childish and almost unreadable

Great love stories. The book seemed different for Danielle Steel in a good way. The characters were well-developed and easy to fall in love with.

A night to remember. Many twists and turns leading to the ball. In the end, lots of family dynamics, then the right couples got together.

Nice story, terrible writing. I wish another contemporary author like Nora Roberts or Beatriz Williams could take this very interesting plot and write the book. Honestly it feels like it was written for a middle schooler, with repetition that hints at a very poor editing job or an author catering to readers who don’t want depth. It’s been years and years since I read Danielle Steele. I seriously have no idea how she’s a best selling author a million times over. Her writing is jerky and doesn’t flow and I wont even get started at the complete lack of feasibility or even believability of her storyline. No human anywhere is as perfect as her characters and while I understand it’s fictional entertainment it was complete and utter swill in my opinion. Don’t waste your time or money, there are too many amazing contemporary authors out there to waste $15 on this laughable excuse for popular fiction.
