Myyttisen Kleopatran koko tarina.
Faaraoiden sukuun syntynyt Kleopatra hallitsi yli puolet elämästään Egyptin valtakuntaa. Hän johti armeijaa, keksi antaa rahalle arvon ja painatti kasvonsa roomalaiseen kolikkoon. Hän oli miellyttävä, hauska ja kielitaitoinen, ja hänen samettista ääntään kuunneltiin sielläkin, missä häntä vihattiin. Egyptin kansalle hän oli jumalatar ja hän tiesi sen.
Kleopatra meni naimisiin kahden veljensä kanssa ja surmautti jokaisen sisaruksensa. Hän synnytti pojan Caesarille ja kolme lasta Marcus Antoniukselle. Cicero inhosi häntä, Herodes halusi murhata hänet ja keisari Augustinus yritti estää häntä surmaamasta itseään. Niin omavaltaisesti kuin Kleopatra elämäänsä hallitsikin, oman tarinansa muotoutumisessa hän on ollut voimaton. Stacy Schiff (s. 1961) on palkittu yhdysvaltalainen tietokirjailija. Hänen teoksensa Véra – Mrs. Nabokov voitti Pulitzer-palkinnon vuonna 2000. Vuonna 2006 Schiffille myönnettiin Yhdysvaltain Taide- ja kirjallisuusakatemian kirjallisuuspalkinto. Kleopatra on saanut runsaasti kiitosta terävästä ja nautinnollisen analyyttisestä tyylistään.
