Leon, hans föräldrar och två av hans fyra syskon överlevde fasansfulla förhållanden i arbetsläger, och lyckades mirakulöst undkomma döden gång på gång. Resten av hans släktingar, liksom alla grannar i den by som han föddes i, hade inte samma tur.
