Så gick det till när lille Leon blev nummer 289 på Schindlers lista – den yngste någonsin, och så liten att han fick stå på en trälåda för att nå upp till maskinen han skötte. Leon Leyson överlevde fasansfulla förhållanden i koncentrations- och arbetsläger. Han berättar sin historia utan bitterhet, med egen röst och unika minnen. Han ger sin personliga bild av Oskar Schindler, mannen i nazistuniform som räddade över tusen liv. Leon talade sällan om sin bakgrund, men när Spielbergs film Schindler’s List gick upp på biograferna började han motvilligt berätta för en journalist. Sedan fortsatte han tala, ända tills han gick bort, dagen efter att bokmanuset var klart.
