Girt by David Hunt Book Summary

Girt. No word could better capture the essence of Australia . . .

In this hilarious history, David Hunt reveals the truth of Australia's past, from megafauna to Macquarie - the cock-ups and curiosities, the forgotten eccentrics and Eureka moments that have made us who we are.

Girt introduces forgotten heroes like Mary McLoghlin, transported for the crime of 'felony of sock', and Trim the cat, who beat a French monkey to become the first animal to circumnavigate Australia. It recounts the misfortunes of the escaped Irish convicts who set out to walk from Sydney to China, guided only by a hand-drawn paper compass, and explains the role of the coconut in Australia's only military coup.

Our nation's beginnings are steeped in the strange, the ridiculous and the frankly bizarre. Girt proudly reclaims these stories for all of us.

Not to read it would be un-Australian.

'A sneaky, sometimes shocking peek under the dirty rug of Australian history.' John Birmingham

'Girt … cuts an irreverent swath through the facts, fools, fantasies and frauds that made this country what it is today, hoisting sacred cows on their own petards and otherwise sawing the legs off Lady Macquarie's chair. I was transported.' —Shane Maloney, The Age Best Books of 2013

'Girt is a ripping read… a humorous history that is accessible enough to share with the eight-year-old. Hunt's writing interests span comedy, politics and history, a happy triumvirate when your subject is Australia.' —Stephen Romei, The Australian

Girt. Brilliant book, apart from being hilarious it was also insightful and detailed

Amusing and Enlightening. Amusing and an amazing book. I learnt (if you call it that) Australian history in the 1970s at primary and high school. A few familiar names cropped up here but the characters are more fleshed out than I recall. Again all flawed individuals and not colonial heroes. Now on to read the other books in the series to see if other names I recall appear. I’m looking at you Warburton, Goss and D’Entecatreaux……

The Mystery of History. Buried somewhere in all those dusty tomes on people and their doings are clues for us on what it might mean to be human. Sadly, most authors ensure those clues never surface from the compacted sub- soil of facts, dates and the other signs of an orderly progression of mankind along the timeline to the present. Hunt gives us a feel for the blood and sinew of figures like Bligh and Macquarie and, though he may dwell over- long on some of their oddities, there is no doubting they become almost as real as.... Present figures in our much staid ear society. Loved the book, loved his drollery and am inspired to check out his other works.

Girt. Funny stuff! Who knew early Australian history could be interesting?

The inside story from the First Fleet to Macquarie. Far more entertaining and credible than the cosmetic version we were repetitively served at school. Joseph Banks was a real lad!

Girt. A fantastic read and we'll worth the investment. I fully recommend this to anybody who has a passing or in depth interest in early Australian history. Entertaining and informative. Well done :)

Eh, not bad. Might read the second, might not. Probably wouldn’t recommend to a friend. Still a few good laughs and interesting things for a straight history book.

Girt: The Unauthorised History of Australia. Not just informative, but extremely funny. Recommended by Chris Taylor of The Chaser and John Birmingham.

Girt. Loved this book.

Laugh out loud history. I loved every word of this cracking version of our ridiculous Australian history. Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in a good laugh and some interesting little known anecdotes about the beginnings of our country. Buy it now, don't hesitate!

Girt. A rich and humerus account of early Australia
