Nucleul principal al activității de jurnalist politic a lui Mihai Eminescu s-a desfășurat timp de șase ani în perioada (1877-1883), la cotidianul Timpul, organul oficial al Partidului Conservator, unde în 1880 și 1881 a fost redactor șef. Ocazional a colaborat cu articole politice sau pe teme culturale și la alte reviste sau gazete ale epocii, în perioada 1870-1877 publicând în Albina, Familia lui Iosif Vulcan, Federațiunea, Convorbiri literare, Curierul de Iași.
Într-o scrisoare, referindu-se la munca repetitivă pe care o făcea în redacția gazetei Timpul, unde trebuia să transforme în știri fluxul sosit pe telegraful agenției de presă Havas, actualmente Reuters, poetul scria "Bat telegramele Havas, arză-le-ar focul să le arză!". Era perfect conștient că potențialul său creativ se risipește în aceea muncă intelectuală de natură inferioară, el fiind obligat să-și asigure existența și să întrerupă șantierul său spiritual, fiind complet lipsit de resurse materiale și neprimind niciun fel de stipendiere din partea statului român.
