Ungeklärt bleibt, wann genau Grimmelshausen seine Tätigkeit als Schriftsteller begann. Einen Hinweis liefert die Tatsache, dass alle Werke Grimmelshausens in seinen letzten zehn Lebensjahren erschienen, also seit 1666. Zahlreiche Schriftstücke, die er als Regimentsschreiber und als Burgverwalter anfertigte, sind erhalten, jedoch weder Manuskripte noch Tagebücher oder Briefe über seine schriftstellerischen Aktivitäten oder sein Privatleben. Mit nur drei Ausnahmen brachte er seine Bücher unter Pseudonymen heraus. Dabei verwendete er mit Vorliebe Anagramme, die er aus seinem Namen bildete.
