Zwei Novellen des Schriftstellers Gustav Falke.
„Der Spanier“ erzählt von den beiden Nachbarskindern Blanche und Lux, deren kindliche Idylle durcheinander gerät, als der Spanier Manuel, zwei Jahre älter als Lux und schon fast erwachsen, in Blanches Elternhaus zieht, um dort ein Jahr lang zu wohnen und Deutsch zu lernen. Blanche ist von dem südländischen Flair des Besuchers fasziniert, während in Lux feindselige Gefühle für den „Eindringling“ aufkeimen.
„Herr Purtaller und seine Tochter“ leben in äußerst ärmlichen Verhältnissen, obwohl Herr Purtaller für sich, seine kranke Frau und seine begabte Tochter eigentlich ganz andere Pläne hatte: seine Gattin hatte Aussicht auf eine große Bühnenkarriere, doch gesundheitliche Probleme fesseln sie ans Bett. Er selbst scheitert kläglich als Theaterdirektor. Da doch wenigstens seine Tochter Sidonia es einmal besser haben soll, verdient er sich mehr schlecht als recht als Privatlehrer ein bescheidenes Einkommen, das die Ausbildung der Tochter finanzieren soll. Doch das Geld reicht vorne und hinten nicht. Die gutmütige, hilfsbereite Witwe Köpke könnte die letzte Rettung sein, doch Herr Purtaller kann dem Alkohol nicht widerstehen ...
