The Fifth Season Book Reviews
The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin Book Summary
At the end of the world, a woman must hide her secret power and find her kidnapped daughter in this "intricate and extraordinary" Hugo Award winning novel of power, oppression, and revolution. (The New York Times)
This is the way the world ends. . .for the last time.
It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester.
This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.
Read the first book in the critically acclaimed, three-time Hugo award-winning trilogy by NYT bestselling author N. K. Jemisin.

masterpiece. Iāve been a scifi and fantasy fan for 45 years and only rarely do we get such a great author writing in our genre. Jemisin is up there with Frank Herbert and Ursula K. LeGuin in my book.
You won't be disappointed.. All I can say is, I can't wait until the next book is released. NK Jemisin has created an incredible delight. Fantasy isn't supposed to be this good, this literate. This girl can weave a story line like no other. It's a must read.
Solid read. I wasnāt overly impressed with the work for a Hugo Winner. Itās a fun book, though. The world building is good, but I would have liked more background on the different factions. The reveals are a bit cheap and predictable. The primary antagonist faction is interesting, but you donāt learn much about them throughout the course of the book. At times, the plot seems somewhat listless, but that might be a product of the narrative structure. Overall, the author has constructed an interesting world filled with relatively flat characters. I am on the fence about whether to read the sequel, but most fantasy lovers will enjoy this book.
Wonderfully fresh. Unlike anything out there in sci-fi
Itās good. You shouldnāt hesitate reading the piece.
Boring. I could not finish this book.
What a Ride!. There isnāt a coaster on earth that will give you the rush, jolts, twists and inversions that Jemisin does in this novel. What a ride!
Outstanding in Every Way. Just superb. Ms. Jemisin constructs a riveting opening for her "Broken Earth" trilogy. Assured in voice and world-building prowess, she lays out the Stillness in all its palpable glory and misery. Highly recommended.
I'm still going. I've read the inheritance trilogy now fifth season. On to the Obelisk gate and every other book NKJ has written. Enjoying every word she writes and it's never the same journey when reading her work.
Excellent writing, a profound page-turner. Wonderful
Breathtakingly complex and appropriately Heart wrenching. I was assigned this book in my English 1B class, and what started as an assignment turned me into a full blown FAN. I can say with certainty that this book took me on so many emotional ups and downs I couldnāt put it down until I was done. It makes me want to start reading the rest of the trilogy IMMEDIATELY. Thank you for this amazing story!
The Fifth Season. A book that is poignantly powerful in these times of our own environmental uncertainty and loss. I cannot help but wonder, āWhat might humanity become?ā In The Fifth Season we are given a glimpse into the depths of the human capacity for cruelty in survival, death, transformation, resilience, and hope. And all written in such a way to make us ask, āCould this, in fact, be me?ā
One of my favorites in a while. I started reading The Fifth Season because it was recommended if you liked The Name of the Wind. Wow, is all I can say. The world Jemisin has created is incredible, and I thoroughly enjoyed the geology and physics intertwined in the novel. If you're looking for a fantastic modern day fantasy novel, read this. I'll be buying the hard copy of the trilogy to put on my bookshelves.
Couldnāt put down. I usually get bored with books after a couple of chapters. This book sucked me in and I couldnāt look away. My poor kids had to fend for themselves until it was over :)
Great read, great beginning!. Loved the entire book. Really get into worlds made up in their entirety by the author. So much description, so much love, so much hate, so much adventure! I will be reading the rest of this series when the rest of her books come out. For the record, I finished this book in one sitting. For me, it was that good. It was the perfect read when the power went out during a tropical storm that hit big island Hawaii. Definitely getting the rest of the series, definitely !
Good read. Struggled through the first few chapters, but it hooked me soon after great book.
Very good. N.K Jemisinās āThe Fifth Seasonā is a literary work of art that shows how humanity is often afraid of what it doesnāt understand, and what people will do to oppress the beings they fear.
Wonderful story. Itās amusing to be caught up in a sensational story told with such craftsmanship. Every single word is executed with such precision. Fantastic!
Distracting Style. Could not get interested due to the weird present tense writing style.
My brain is on fire. No lie. The best book Iāve read in the last decade. Iām not much of a reader and I like to keep a reasonable bedtime but Iāve been up til 1 am all week reading this book!!!
Breathtakingly Good. Beautifully written, utterly unique, this book is like nothing I've ever read. I loved it, and am immediately buying the sequel. Wow.
Tough to follow. I was confused most of the time reading this book and am an avid fantasy reader. The characters were difficult to connect with and not described well. The world building would have been cool if ANYTHING was described. I liked the story but it took me 50% before i understood what was happening.
Somewhat disappointed. I liked the world the author created, (not that Iād want to live in it), and unlike other reviewers I had no problems with the use of present tense or the writing style in general. I probably would have continued the series with the next book, if not for some gratuitous and in my opinion non-sensical events towards the end. I donāt want to spoil anything, but suffice it to say it were things one would expect in some edgy romance novel maybe, most likely there to satisfy some teenās fantasies, but here it added nothing to the narrative, world, or characters, which I never ended up warming up to. Personally I canāt follow the wild acclaim, and the book is definitely on the shorter side, too. I love Fantasy and have read many series, and while this started out promising - I guess itās just not for me.
Incredible story! Unexpected!. Jemisin has upped her game with this book. It takes the fantasy genre into new territory. This is NOT a tale for the faint of heart, not because of sex or violence (although there is some of both) but for the gut and heart wrenching story telling. The characters, the world building, the story - all are so unexpected and unique. I can't wait for the next book. This volume alone is a tremendous achievement, if she can keep up this level and stick the landing in the next two books, this series could become, imo, one of those critical sf/fantasy classics that will be considered required reading even decades from now.
You have no idea. This woman is the best thing to happen to fantasy. I can't even fully express, without sounding douchey, how effing magnificent her works are. This is the woman to watch for fantasy literature for years to come.
Unique and spectacular. Read it. Itās worth it. Couldnāt put it down.
The best!. Amazing. The science fantasy book Iāve been searching for.
Loved it. I loved this book. It is so unlike anything Iāve ever read and I couldnāt put it down.
5 am. Yes it's that good. Best female protagonist I can remember. Most interesting storytelling format. (Wink wink) and it's supernaturally stupendous. Also its nice to read great fantasy that is for mature readers that doesn't throw it in your face. Her books aren't 700 pages long, but you still go for a ride just as long. I don't skim at all, which says a lot. ( I did recently finish book of the Malazan fallen...if you have a few months of spare tim gk for it heh)
Extraordinary. Amazing imagination and skill. Strange and absolutely fantastic.
Stunning, dark and utterly brilliant. The Fifth Season is the 2016 Hugo Award winner. ANY award this N. K. Jemisin novel receives is deserved. Her terse and evocative prose guides you to the inescapable conclusions she wishes you to reach, with flawless timing and irresistable impact. Told from three points of view - Essunās, Syeniteās and Damayaās - the novel is sort of a history of Earthās future, and so it focuses on two lessons: 1. Human history is based on disasters and conflicts. The history of a disaster is written by its survivors. The history of a conflict is written by the winners. Therefore, history and truth are not necessarily the same. 2. Discovering truth is like peeling an onion. What you get when you peel away one layer is just the next layer. This peeling process can be both long and painful. As the reader, you walk with the characters of the novel, learning and reacting just as they do. It is powerfully immediate and unforgetable. I couldnāt put it down.
Great Start to the Series. This story kept me glued from beginning to end. I love the connection between all the POV and how the story was structured. The discrimination, abuse and lose was heartbreaking throughout the entire book. Iām honestly rooting for Essun to burn everything down. Iām looking forward to learning more about the Obelisks and Essun growing in her powers. Interested to see how the daughter ties in as well. Iām glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and gave this a try. Looking forward to the next book.
Show, donāt tell. Not a fan of the way she *tells* the story. The author violates this principle for the entire book.
