Daisuke es un joven algo atolondrado que, a pesar de tener estudios, riqueza y una buena familia, descubre a los treinta años que la vida no merece la pena y, por tanto, se hunde en la desidia. Dado que le es imposible alcanzar ningún tipo de paz mental, incapaz de solucionar el conflicto que se crea en su interior entre la tradición de su país y las nuevas costumbres occidentales, Daisuke opta por entregarse a la pereza. Para él tal actitud constituye la única rebelión posible y, además, una manera más o menos fiable de mantener la lucidez. No obstante, esa refinada indolencia suya se verá trastocada cuando, sin esperarlo, se enamora locamente de la mujer de su mejor amigo. Por primera vez, Daisuke tendrá que elegir su propio destino.
Traducida a numerosos idiomas desde su publicación en 1909, "Daisuke" es la segunda de las novelas de la trilogía iniciada con Sanshiro, y una de las obras más aclamadas y apasionantes del japonés Natsume Soseki.
