”I en handvändning drog han ägghvitsskorpan af såret, och fastän Karl kved och våndade sig af smärta, pressade han och kramade omkring såret, tills mycket gult var kommit fram. Dödkött vällde upp ur såret, och det beströk han med röd olja, som han hade med sig. Och denna olja måste ha varit skarpt svidande, ty svetten pärlade på Karls kalla panna och droppade nedåt kinden på Anitas varma, små händer, som stödde vännens hufvud.
Hon gjorde detta af sin systerliga ömhet för Karl, men på samma gång följde hon med uppspärrade ögon läkarens spända blick och snabba, fasta handgrepp. Han hade ej minsta tvekan om hvad han borde göra; han fumlade ej med vigda ljus och böner eller signerier och underliga ord, som måhända hade kraft, men som ingen förstod.”
Theophrastus Bombast von Hohenheim, kallad Paracelsus, var under sin tid en berömd och omstridd läkare och alkemist. I en av han bevarade anteckningar nämns kort ett besök till Stockholm. Det är denna uppgift Wester byggt sin roman på – en romantiserad historisk skildring där Paracelsus följer med Kristian Tyranns härtåg till Stockholm 1520.
Ellen Wester, 1860-1936, var författare och en ivrig förespråkare för kvinnlig rösträtt. Paracelsus i Stockholm utkom för första gången 1908.
