The Book of Joan by Melissa Rivers Book Summary

This New York Times bestseller is a hilarious and inspiring tribute to the iconic comedian Joan Rivers by the person who knew her best--her daughter, Melissa.

Joan and Melissa Rivers had one of the most celebrated mother-daughter relationships of all time.  If you think Joan said some outrageous things to her audiences as a comedian, you won’t believe what she said and did in private. Her love for her daughter knew no bounds—or boundaries, apparently. ("Melissa, I acknowledge that you have boundaries. I just choose to not respect them.") In The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief and Manipulation, Melissa shares stories (like when she was nine months old and her parents delivered her to Johnny Carson as a birthday gift), bon mots (“Missy, is there anything better than seeing a really good looking couple pushing a baby that looks like a Sasquatch who got caught in a house fire?”), and life lessons from growing up in the Rosenberg-Rivers household (“I can do tips and discounts and figure out the number of gay men in an audience to make it a good show. That’s all the math you’ll ever need.”). These were just the tip of the iceberg when it came to life in the family that Melissa describes as more Addams than Cleaver. And at the center of it all was a tiny blond force of nature.

In The Book of Joan, Melissa Rivers relates funny, poignant and irreverent observations, thoughts, and tales about the woman who raised her and is the reason she considers valium one of the four basic food groups.

ONE FUNNY BOOK. I laughed out loud for so much of this book. Just thinking about it makes me smile. I read chapters out loud to my husband. He loved it. I am sure when I need a smile, a laugh, I will read this over many times. Thank you Melissa Rosenberg for sharing Mother wonderful, fascinating and brave life.

有唯. very good

The Book of Joan. Having lost my mother recently, I felt very connected to this book and the relationship Melissa had with her mother. Very funny, interesting, loving. I loved that Melissa can tell these stories and share these memories. She adored her mother as I adored mine. A great book worth reading about mothers and daughters who become best friends.

A glimpse of a beautiful mother/daughter relationship. Reading this book has put my heart at ease that Melissa Rivers is okay. This is good to know as I'm very close to my own mother and even closer to my dear daughter. As I read this book I wanted to tell Melissa that I miss her mom. I don't miss people I don't know, but I do miss Joan Rivers. I miss watching Joan and Melissa, the hilarious reality show. Thank goodness we still have Melissa who is currently hosting Fashion Police. My only complaint about this book is that I'm done reading it already!

Fantastic!!!!. I hope my children feel the same way Melissa does about her Mother! Funny & just plain awesome!

I laughed. I cried.. I absolutely loved this book. Joan was my fun and crazy Aunt Joanie in my head and these little slices of her life reiterated our connection. I read this while chaperoning 30 teenagers on a bus so I had to hide my giggles and tears- needless to say I did very little chaperoning because I finished this book on the bus. I was very upset by her unexpected death. When stars pass I'm rarely effected emotionally- hey they're not paying my mortgage or buying me diamonds- but Joan was different. I loved her sense of humor and style and miss seeing her in my living room every week. I really appreciate Melissa sharing so much with us, especially so soon. Thanks Missy and well done ( she's my friend in my head too so I can call her by her nickname).

Book of Joan. An amazing tribute from a loving daughter to one of the most inspirational, successful and certain,y funny woman in show business. Joan Rivers had a unique personality and it was inherited by her daughter Melissa. A well written enjoyable book I highly recommend!

The Book of Joan. I'm a huge fan of Joan Rivers and was excited to read this book written by her daughter. While it was cute, well-written, and somewhat insightful, I would have loved some more seriousness at times. I would have loved some more private, touching, moments shared between mother and daughter. Other than that, it was a fun read.

Moving. Loved it, Melissa did a great job

The Book of Joan by Melissa Rivers. This book was heartwarming, touching and laugh out loud funny. I will miss Joan and I can relate as I too have lost my Mom. Thank you Melissa for this beautiful homage to your Mom and all the insight into who she really was!!

The Book of Joan. The book was delightful, and Joan would have been proud.

The Book Of Joan. What a great tribute to the woman who was like part of my own family. I cried when she died. It was like losing my grandmother all over again. Melissa did a wonderful job bringing us inside the life of Joan.

Laugh after laugh. I read this book. I loved it. This book , written from her daughter POV was heartwarming and hilarious. I learned so much about Joan rivers one of my favorite people. I highly recommend for Joan fans.

The book of Joan. Well done Melissa. Your mother lives on in your writing. I could actually hear hear speaking the words. Thank you for sharing, making me cry and laugh. Joan would be proud.

She probably didn't write it. No way this couldn't have written and published this so quickly.

The Book of Joan. Great book. I've been following your mother's career for a long time. She always made me laugh. Her jewelry made me look beautiful. Your book affirmed that she was a treasure never to be forgotten.
