A torch against the night. Read the first one it was amazing looking forward to this one.

Amazing. Absolutely phenomenal!

DNF at 54%. The book lost appeal and the story started splitting off in a way that I didn’t necessarily enjoy.

Decent Read. So I read in little over a day, certainly a page turner..... But.... I feel like what happened with Helene was very dark. Like, it’s not a light read (at all). Parts felt slightly unnecessary to the extent that they were (if that makes sense). As I’ve already invested in the first half, I’ll definitely finish the series and hopefully it will be worth it!

The next fantasy that should be produced in film!. Excellent and original immersive fantasy series. Easy to read but engaging with a carefully crafted world that captures the essence of heroes, villains and magic without repeating old and tired narratives. The whole series would be incredible if developed into a GOT-type television show. Everything is there, intrigue, adventure, betrayal, love, family and mythical creatures.

👏🏼. I haven't read a book this amazing and such a long time. It is easily one of my favorites and I'm sure will become the new 'twilight' of the time.

Why Laia. Why.. *annoyed angst*

A series worth re-reading countless times. Sabaa Tahir's sequel to the amazing “An Ember in the Ashes”, "A Torch Against the Night" tells the story of Laia and Elias’ continued escape from Blackcliff Academy in Serra where the evil elite soldiers (Masks) are trained for the Martial Empire. Laia, a Scholar and former Scholar revolutionary informant as a voluntary slave to the supremely evil Blackcliff Commandant, is determined to save her brother, Darin, from the worst prison in the Empire, Kauf. Elias, former Mask in Training and former Aspirant in the Emperor Trials, gave Laia his oath to help save Darin when she rescued Elias from his execution for failing the Emperor Trials. As they cross the empire, they have to stay hidden from those tracking them: Elias’ evil mother, the Blackcliff Commandant; Helene, Elias’ best friend from Blackcliff and the new Blood Shrike (lead executioner to the new Emperor); and all of the previously mythical horrors recently unleashed by the Nightbringer, who wants to destroy all Scholars. Helene, who was extensively tortured for Elias’ escape, is ordered to hunt Elias down while fearing the new Emperor’s designs on her family if she fails. The future of the Martial Empire and its enemies are at stake. "A Torch Against the Night" is the incredible five star sequel to the amazing book, “An Ember in the Ashes”. The worldbuilding from the first book grows to include the Tribes. I like how Tahir portrays the strengths of each character while simultaneously showing how they cope with their previous or ongoing traumas. I like Laia’s quiet inner strength and Elias’ determination, like a legendary soldier committed to his just cause. Notwithstanding Helene’s position, it is easy to feel moved by her desire to serve her Empire, despite its transgressions (especially against her). The incorporation of the mythical horrors of the Scholar Empire helps this story transcend a typical 4 star series and become a series worth re-reading countless times. My opinion is solely my own, but I do want to thank Goodreads, Penguin Teen, and Sabaa Tahir for a copy of this awesome book.

Better than the first. I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. If you enjoyed the first one, you'll love this one.

I cannot put these books down!. Amazing. I love the characters and their vulnerability. Sometimes in fantasy, writers make characters vulnerable but in a way that’s not truly insecure, imperfect and real like we are. So I love the reality of the characters like in real life we have to face ourselves and become better. I mean the cliffhangers at every chapter… you just cannot stop reading :)

Somewhat disappointing. I absolutely LOVED the first book, and could not wait for the second to come out! However, even as I was reading it, it didn't grip me the way the first one did. In fact, I found myself growing more disappointed as I read on. This book had a much darker tone to it, and I found myself extremely disappointed in Laia's feelings and the choices she makes. At points in the book, I felt like I wanted to shake her and knock some sense into her. I hope the author ties everything together in a book three and gives me the happy ending that I desire. But after reading book two, I feel more confused and dissatisfied than ever before.

Book #2 sooooo good!!!!!. Wow wow wow, this book was just as good as the first! Holding my breath reading it! Screaming is frustration when the plot twist and turns! I am so excited about this series and can not WAIT for #3!!! 😍❤️
