The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney Book Summary

A warm, funny and acutely perceptive debut novel about four adult siblings and the fate of the shared inheritance that has shaped their choices and their lives.

Every family has its problems. But even among the most troubled, the Plumb family stands out as spectacularly dysfunctional. Years of simmering tensions finally reach a breaking point on an unseasonably cold afternoon in New York City as Melody, Beatrice, and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, freshly released from rehab. Months earlier, an inebriated Leo got behind the wheel of a car with a nineteen-year-old waitress as his passenger. The ensuing accident has endangered the Plumbs' joint trust fund, “The Nest,” which they are months away from finally receiving. Meant by their deceased father to be a modest mid-life supplement, the Plumb siblings have watched The Nest’s value soar along with the stock market and have been counting on the money to solve a number of self-inflicted problems.

Melody, a wife and mother in an upscale suburb, has an unwieldy mortgage and looming college tuition for her twin teenage daughters. Jack, an antiques dealer, has secretly borrowed against the beach cottage he shares with his husband, Walker, to keep his store open. And Bea, a once-promising short-story writer, just can’t seem to finish her overdue novel. Can Leo rescue his siblings and, by extension, the people they love? Or will everyone need to reimagine the futures they’ve envisioned? Brought together as never before, Leo, Melody, Jack, and Beatrice must grapple with old resentments, present-day truths, and the significant emotional and financial toll of the accident, as well as finally acknowledge the choices they have made in their own lives.

This is a story about the power of family, the possibilities of friendship, the ways we depend upon one another and the ways we let one another down. In this tender, entertaining, and deftly written debut, Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney brings a remarkable cast of characters to life to illuminate what money does to relationships, what happens to our ambitions over the course of time, and the fraught yet unbreakable ties we share with those we love.

Mrs. Enjoyable book! But there was a lot of jumping among characters and story lines. It was hard to get into the stories because you always had to wait for 3 or 4 chapters to get back to the story/character you were really interested in.

Underwhelming. I kept waiting for something amazing to tie all of these characters together. Their background stories were hard to keep track of and the ending was truly underwhelming.

Intriguing. Then: trite. An interesting premise, an enjoyable writing style, and well-drawn characters. But in the end, it was just pathetic: all the needy female characters get their knights in shining armor and live happily ever after. Really???

The Nest. Good summer read. The ending is predictable.

Boring. After 1/4 of the book in, I was waiting for something to actually happen. Couldn't finish it. Very disappointing.

Great Read. I loved it. I was drawn in by how each chapter developed more deeply a Plumb family member while deepening the plot. Great characters, dynamic story with a great message! Thank you.

Decent read. First book I have ever read from this author. The book was an okay read. I think I finished more out of necessity then true drive. It's a decent read.

Refreshes. Happy Juan inland guyhl Happy ones and i

A Big Fat Yawn. There is nothing funny, warm, or perceptive about this book. I am so tired of reading over hyped books that over promise and completely underwhelm. The characters are tired and paper thin. And in terms of dysfunction, there is nothing here at all that remotely is original. Completely boring waste of time.

The Nest. They should have named this book, "This is Where I Leave You Too", but with characters you have no sympathy for because they are all pathetic. I had to struggle to get through. Disappointed I didn't check it out from the library! It was a waste of money!

The Nest. I didn't like the book. It was a flatline. I wouldn't recommend it.

The Nest. Overly hyped convoluted story. Not worth my time!

The Nest. A complex and compelling story about the complicated relationship of family.

The Nest. This was rated as "family" but when I began reading the Sample I downloaded, I found it sexually explicit. I deleted it as this isn't what I want to read.

The nest. Interesting adult sibling story but did no answer enough questions

The Nest. A third of the way through I totally lost interest. Don't waste your time.

BORING. I kept waiting for something to happen in the book but that never happened. A complete waste of time and definitely overhyped!!!!!

Amazing characters. I am waiting for this book to become a movie. I'm thinking about the actors who can play each part. The book is so well written and characters very well explained and developed. I read constantly and so many books become a burden to finish. This book was wonderful!!! I loved and hated each one of them. That's the beauty of it. They are all so real and believable. Enjoy!

Sequel??. The story was enjoyable but seemed to end abruptly. Makes me wonder if there will be a sequel.

Wonderful writing. I so enjoyed this book. Characters were great. It took a bit of time to get into it, but once I did, I didn't want it to end.

Couldn't put the book down. Was an interesting read until the last page, could not put the book down.

Boring. Boring and repetitive. I found the liberal use of the “F” word to be offensive and unnecessary.

The Nest. Couldn't get past the first chapter. Just awful writing.

The Nest. This book kept me chucking through the whole thing. I rarely read a book twice but I’ve read this one twice!

Great Pleasuring And Joyful.... An Unexpected Great Summer Read That Provides A Web Of Well Authentic Characters And Relations That Carry You Slowly Into Believing Their True Happiness And Priorities, But Completely Contrasting It With Their True Relief And Life's Joy!! Simply Beautifully Written And Well Enjoyed!!!

One flew over the coocoo's Nest. Devoured this book - thought it was brilliant.

would be good on screen. The description of this book includes the word funny which I didn't find. Really it's just a life story. Siblings are supposed to inherit a bunch of money. One has drug and legal fees that affect them all. Then the story reveals over time how they're all pretty flawed and how everyone is going to be okay in the end. All of the characters are struggling with some kind of issue. There are problems in jobs, money, attitudes and every area. The siblings are the causes of their own unhappiness and have some growing up to do. The family has it's dysfunction, lows and highs. I wasn't crazy about any of the siblings, but they seemed to have likable romantic partners and offspring for the most part. Overall, I liked it, but didn't love it. Reading this book didn't inspire any major feelings in me, but I can see how it would make an interesting tv show.

Expected more. The story had a good start, a seemingly engaging storyline and development of characters. The story gel flat about half way through, with no real pinnacle.

The nest. Great read. Good characters kept the pages turning. Using it for a book club book.

Good book. Good book

Perfectly fine. I liked this book fine. It wasn't quite a page turner, but it was interesting.

Nice Story. Very nice family interest story. Any family member can relate to the characters and their traits.

The nest. I'm a fairly particular reader. This was a good read. It held my attention, gave great insight into its characters, and ended well.

The Nest. Couldn’t put it down. Characters have depth - albeit white-people-with-money-in-new-York kind of depth but nonetheless, this author is mindful of that and builds real challenges into real lives.... Life is hard, marriage is hard, parenting too is hard. This author has a great sense of humor, along with a consistent and beautifully detached respect for even her most dislikable characters. Wonderful

Healing and Moving On. Intriguing story about the bond between siblings and the harm we can accidentally do one another. The plot focuses on that special familial bond that can't be severed, healing in spite of everything, and creating family legacies that go on long after we've ceased. Highly recommend the read.

A waste of time. Whiney characters, unrealistic reactions to bad situations, typical druggie-brother-causes-tensions-in-the-family BS storyline. I can just see this being turned into a really bad movie with an all-star cast. Watch some episodes of Beverly Hills 90210 on mute and imagine they're in NY, now you've read this book.

Great read!. I throughly enjoyed this book. Great story, good character development, and it wrapped up nicely in the end.

The Nest. A delightful engaging read. Haven't experienced the joy of getting "lost" inside a book in a long time. Each character and their story captures you and pulls you in.

The Nest. I loved this book!!!!!!

Charming and dynamic!. The Nest was immensely enjoyable. The four dysfunctional Plumb siblings have counted the days until they receive their inheritance, letting the promise of their new wealth shape the choices they have made along the way. But when their mother uses the money to rescue the eldest sibling from an unfortunate situation, they are all forced to scramble their lies into a new reality. Sweeney superbly crafts each character she introduces, fleshing out their backstory and tying them into the plot with expertise. With so many characters being introduced, I expected to get confused, but each one resonated with a distinctive voice. I desperately wanted to dislike the Plumb siblings for throwing tantrums when they discovered their leisurely lifestyle wouldn't be as easy to obtain as they expected, but I found myself rooting for each one, hoping they would find the peace and happiness they wanted. Beautifully written, charming, and dynamic, this debut novel will be a hit!

Ehh. I wasn't into this book, yes everything came together in the end and you wanted a good ending. I thought there could be more. More drama, more intrigue, more about why Leo did the things he did.
