Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell Book Summary

Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Revisionist History and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Outliers, offers a powerful examination of our interactions with strangers and why they often go wrong—now with a new afterword by the author.

A Best Book of the Year: The Financial Times, Bloomberg, Chicago Tribune, and Detroit Free Press

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to one another that isn’t true?

Talking to Strangers is a classically Gladwellian intellectual adventure, a challenging and controversial excursion through history, psychology, and scandals taken straight from the news. He revisits the deceptions of Bernie Madoff, the trial of Amanda Knox, the suicide of Sylvia Plath, the Jerry Sandusky pedophilia scandal at Penn State University, and the death of Sandra Bland—throwing our understanding of these and other stories into doubt.

Something is very wrong, Gladwell argues, with the tools and strategies we use to make sense of people we don’t know. And because we don’t know how to talk to strangers, we are inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world. In his first book since his #1 bestseller David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell has written a gripping guidebook for troubled times.

Rambling. Although some of the stories were interesting, they were distracting from the books title I fail to see him tying much together here.

Not his best. To not discuss race as part of transparency is ridiculous. Many have been trained by society to default to the worst human traits when they deal with African Americans who are strangers. For the author not to address these prejudices is extremely short sighted. Not one of his best books.

Horrible read. Boring beyond belief.

Love. I couldn’t say enough good things about this book. I love this author and am so relieved and delighted to see him defend unusual and/or misunderstood people in such a relevant and powerful way. It’s so important to stay humble when it comes to our perception of others intentions

For forward thinkers. Still doesn’t put blame on anyone.?!

Disappointed. I guess that I set my expectations too high. Lots of research, crime investigations and so on, but very little valuable tips about “talking to strangers”. I didn’t like this book.

Very disappointing. I expected to learn something profound. I expected to learn something usefull to my life. What this book is full of progressive thought and political views. I enjoyed Tipping Point and Blink. I had such high hopes for Talking to Strangers. Complete dissapointment. I kept reading it hoping it would get better. Never did.

Great Read. As always, Malcolm Gladwell delivers thought provoking reading. His narrative was excellent and well thought out. I devoured this book and could not believe how absorbed I was by it.

Interesting but no real conclusions. The premise of the book is compelling and the anecdotes are interesting, but it doesn’t seem like a tight argument to me. He’s fumbling for a common thread and didn’t find it.

Thought provoking. Well-written with lots of information and insight

Check Thy Self, Before Thine Wreck Thy Self. Back again w an authentic format delivered as he has for the past decade or so. Very compelling look inside the human core. Using a small set principles highlighted in Blink, he makes a larger call to “Checking ones self, before wrecking ones self”.

Great!. I love this story and Is there a bookstore that Shells this book?

Complete disappointment. The book is much like his previous, except this one approaches contemporary tragedies with sophomoric levels of sophistication. The book often seems to take on polemical issues for the sake of being controversial alone. In exploring how strangers interact, this book identifies some interesting ideas but lacks depth, thoughtfulness, and perspective when those ideas brush against things like sexual assault or institutionalized racism.

MG Jumps Small Rubber Shark Screaming Jaws. A collection of tedious liberal totems re-told unimaginatively. Just to make a single observation: "M Brown was SUSPECTED of robbing a convenience store"?? No Malcolm, we have a videotape of hi, robbing the store and roughing up the terrified owner. He was a 6' 8", 300# hyper-violent thug who assaulted a police officer in his car and then attacked him again. Even the egregious E Holder's Justice Department could not find anything wrong with the officer's actions. The rest of the book is packed with shallow bias and nonsense. You have gotten lazy and arrogant. I will never waste another dime on you.

My Third Gladwell Read. Again he has written a book I could not put down! Learned a lot. Things I had not thought about.

Great Listen. I listened to the audio version and found it fascinating. I would imagine you don’t get the same experience from reading it so if you can, listen instead.

Progressive bs. I’m sure they will have students reading this because it’s full of fake news used to push social justice and progressive views. I think we’ve had enough of this crap.

Talking to Strangers. Just did not make a clear point.

Well done. Everything Malcomb Gladwell does is wonderful, including this book. It’s well written and well researched. Important subject matter and well worth the read.

What’s the point?. Wish I read the reviews before purchasing. Re-reading chapters because I feel like I’m missing the punchline. Some chapters are disturbing to read, no disclaimer or no context given. Hard read, doesn’t get better.

Talking to Strangers. Gladwell’s style comes through again in a brilliant way. Bringing current topics to bare with insight and perspective that fascinates.

Poorly worded. This book is very poorly worded, very disappointed

Loved this audiobook.. I find Gladwell’s books always interesting. I enjoy that they help me examine my assumptions and broaden my understanding of human behavior. Once again I learned there are no easy answers. People and situations are vastly more complicated than what we see through the media. I enjoyed this as an audiobook and recommend that mode.

Talking to Stangers. Strange i read this book yesterday and today new ( or previously ignored) sexual assault account, from college years, against Kavanaugh. I found that part of book about alcohol use in college and blackouts most interesting although after seeing “Hustlers” I really feel naive.

I couldn’t get going with it. I wanted to like this book; I bought it on Gladwell’s reputation (I loved Tipping Point) but found Talking to Strangers lacking any insight or original thought. I also liked (but didn’t love) blink and outliers. He is certainly talented. I muscled though half of this book before throwing in the towel and writing this review. It felt like a walk back in time through some of history’s darkest interpersonal moments. I found it rather dark and bending a bit to typically new-social norms. Sorry, I recommend passing on this one.

Absolutely brilliant. Great book for the times we are faced with as a society today. Highly recommend this book to everyone living in the United States. It will give you more perspective on the social issues at hand.

Fantastic!. Gladwell does it again!

Can’t rate and review if it won’t download. Waste of $12.99. Can’t rate and review if it won’t download. Waste of $12.99

Enlightening as Usual. Gladwell puts together another string of familiar occurrences and then pulls them apart to help us understand why we do what we do. Entertaining, enlightening and informative.

Scattered mess. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of Malcom’s other books, but this was just a meandering , dispersed opinion piece that has no point other than show an incredible bias from the author. I was thrilled when it was over. Disappointing.

Magnificent. Gladwell, once again, provides an excellent account of real-world problems. The reader is forced to examine their reality and consider how bad we are at Talking to Strangers.

Intirguing and thought challenging. I throughly enjoyed this book!

Random noise. Insight into some history is always good but the talking to strangers thread was lacking. Fight till the end to finish.

Bad. Just really bad. Social justice bs.

Thought Provoking Writing. The book was incredibly well-written and I enjoyed the nuances of each lesson and chapter. Would recommend to anyone I come across!

Insightful, relevant, easy to read. This book covers there main sociological topics in a good explanatory manner and relates them to many relevnt examples in modern life. It is easy to read, thanks to the author’s style of writing, but can be a little repetitive, especially of simple topics, which can be tedious. Overall, a worthwhile choice for the curious mind and anyone what looks to improve their views on the world.

very boring. unreadable.... not an interesting sentence in the book.

Not what you expect. Quite boring and dry, there’s much better books for this topic

Loved it!. I’m a fan of Gladwell's, so it was an easy choice to have this as my first read of 2020. In typical fashion, he takes a deep dive in observing the facts and nuances of a topic to glean lessons from it. In the case of this book, he deals with the case of Sandra Bland in the U.S., and explores other tragic stories to explore the depths and learn more, all the while teaching the reader, about talking to strangers.
