Game Change Book Summary

The gripping inside story of the 2008 presidential election, by two of the best political reporters in the country.

“It’s one of the best books on politics of any kind I’ve read. For entertainment value, I put it up there with Catch 22.” —The Financial Times

“It transports you to a parallel universe in which everything in the National Enquirer is true….More interesting is what we learn about the candidates themselves: their frailties, egos and almost super-human stamina.” —The Financial Times

“I can’t put down this book!” —Stephen Colbert

Game Change is the New York Times bestselling story of the 2008 presidential election, by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, two of the best political reporters in the country. In the spirit of Richard Ben Cramer’s What It Takes and Theodore H. White’s The Making of the President 1960, this classic campaign trail book tells the defining story of a new era in American politics, going deeper behind the scenes of the Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin campaigns than any other account of the historic 2008 election.

For anyone with an interest in politics and specifically the political drama that defined the 2008 election, Game Change is a must read. It takes you behind the scenes, beyond the sound bites that you get on television, and puts you right along the characters in this riveting drama. Heinemann's and Halperin's detailed accounting offers a no-holds barred view of the slugfest, depicting a sometimes unflattering, but authentic portrait of some of our nation's most prominent politicians in one of the most historic elections in recent history. Although we all now the outcome, the book will keep the reader riveted, and salivating for more, well beyond the epilogue.
  • The movie was great, unlike the book

I saw the movie first, and it was great. That's why I bought the book. I didn't count them, but my guess is that the book only has 30 pages about Sarah Palin.

Even though you know the outcome, the story told is a page turner. Glimpses of the inner workings of the candidates are brilliant.
  • Best political book I've read

Somehow, the authors made me genuinely interested in -- and empathetic toward -- all of the candidates. I feel I experienced the election from each politician's perspective. Moving toward the 2012 race, I feel more connected and understanding of the process.
  • A wonderful look inside an important election

very personal and anecdotal this book makes us aware that campaigns are more about management than issues.

New info with inside stuff, but want even more. Everybody needs a bathroom sense of humor to tolerate our current crop of politicos. Will look for another episode now that 2012 season is here. It all would be funny, if it wasn't so sad about our supposed leaders!! Don't miss John Edwards haircut on Utube!!!!

Fascinating...an extremely real look at the inner workings of the 2008 presidential campaign. Gives a very fair depiction of all the "players" involved in both parties.

Absolutely riveting! No matter how closely you followed the election of 2008, no matter how much you think you know, you will be engrossed and surprised. The details in this book are stunning.

Makes one wonder how such an incompetent, unqualified candidate such as Palin could make it as far as she did. Just a stunningly disasterous choice. Could not put it down as I'm a political junkie.
