Misunderstanding. This book is the avocation of the victimization of young mainly Arabic Muslim women in the context of French social mores regarding the nature of maidenhood, individuality, freedom and responsibility. It offers the Muslim justification for cultural mores displaced from their homeland into a place and culture that is alien to them without a full appreciation of that culture--but with enough understanding to accentuate perceived hypocrisies. Nevertheless, it argues for some degree of female autonomy -- enough so to garner complaints from reactionary Arabic men. So good for her. It is up to the reader to decide how much the author recognizes the contradictions in female autonomy, whether of maidenhood or motherhood, implied in cultural norms of 'Arabic' female rights and behavior. But it is obviously clear that she believes in female education --against the most persistent forms of male hegemony and destructive paternalism.

Informative!. I enjoyed reading this book and learning the differences between religions and similarities. I encourage any woman to read this!

Very good!!!. I enjoyed reading this book! It did use Christian and Jewish comparisons to show the differences but overall it was truthful and I can better understand Islamic traditions. I appreciate the author's honesty in recognizing that people have gone away from the Quran as many Christians have moved in a direction away from the Bible. As a Christian African American I found that I have experienced many of the problems that Islam may offer a solution to. I'm not saying I'm converting but we as a community may need to consider some of these Islamic ways.

Perfect..... Amazing book, perfect in all ways...

one sided. its an interesting read, but what is not pointed out is that Muslim women have more rights in the west than in many so called Muslim countries. Check out how women are treated in Pakistan and Saudia Arabia.

Clear and informative. Clear overview if important points in islam regarding women and their rights.

A must read for people of faith or none.An eye-opener.. I already knew Islam held women in high regard whereas Christian and Jewish teachings did not. This book tells it with proof in black & white. Stoning women to death for not being a virgin (on her wedding night) is a Jewish teaching (by the way it's "stone her until death on her fathers doorstep" because the "deed was done under his roof") and it's always the Western media that bring it up as an Islamic teaching when some backwards culture stone a woman to death. Islam and culture are not one and the same! Christians/Jews thought the birth of a girl is a "curse" (in Islam it's a blessing) that they are "deceitful" and cannot be trusted because Eve took Adam astray whereas the Quran lays equal blame on both of them. You don't have to be religious to read this, I highly recommend it to people of faith or atheists because these matters are always splashed on our screens and newspapers and they affect us ALL.

Amazing read. As a Muslim woman I learnt a lot about how other religions view women compared to Islam. It was quite surprising and sad to see just how different they talk about women. It made me learn more about how valued a woman is in Islam as-well as her rights as one. It’s so important that in a society that mixes up culture and religion that we know where we stand. Great read, highly recommend!

The True Light. The most rational and enlightening book I have read in my lifetime. Is it a wonder that Islam is the fastest growing religions in the world? Absolute fascination and utter awe.

View-changer, though citation needed. This work dispelled my false notions about the rights and liberties of women as defined in the Quran. It is eloquent and sensible for the most part; bringing to the surface parts of the Talmud; Old & New Testament that most Western Christians and Jews would rather ignore. It places potentially unnecessary weight on an apocryphal work (Ecclesiasticus) for the sake of some arguments. Most importantly, this work tries (albeit unsuccessfully) to sensibly engage with core feminist theory in places. Despite acknowledging it is best if a woman's environment is attuned to her protection through the civility and education of its people, it endorses that women should change to fit their environment. One will find that is an unacceptable stance where the work of feminism is concerned. There are multiple baseless assertions regarding the Western zeitgeist; a number not befitting someone of the author's education. This book could be improved by more citation of scientific work. Nonetheless this is a worthwhile read.
