The Emperor's Blades by Brian Staveley Book Summary

In The Emperor's Blades by Brian Staveley, the emperor of Annur is dead, slain by enemies unknown. His daughter and two sons, scattered across the world, do what they must to stay alive and unmask the assassins. But each of them also has a life-path on which their father set them, destinies entangled with both ancient enemies and inscrutable gods.

Kaden, the heir to the Unhewn Throne, has spent eight years sequestered in a remote mountain monastery, learning the enigmatic discipline of monks devoted to the Blank God. Their rituals hold the key to an ancient power he must master before it's too late.

An ocean away, Valyn endures the brutal training of the Kettral, elite soldiers who fly into battle on gigantic black hawks. But before he can set out to save Kaden, Valyn must survive one horrific final test.

At the heart of the empire, Minister Adare, elevated to her station by one of the emperor's final acts, is determined to prove herself to her people. But Adare also believes she knows who murdered her father, and she will stop at nothing—and risk everything—to see that justice is meted out.

Suspenseful and Imaginative. The author manages to tell three separate stories that all intertwine towards the conclusion. A fresh story and world within the Sci-Fi genre that should be better publicized and acclaimed. Can't wait to see what the seconds book holds.

Great book. As an avid reader of sci-fi fantasy I was pleased to stumble across a new author who's book I didn't want to put down. Great story with detailed characters that really jump off the page. With an interesting world for the story to unfold in. All in all a great read!

Excellent read!. Strongly recommend selecting this book; character development is done well and the storyline draws the reader in a deep and very thorough fashion. I look forward to more from this author.

Love it!. I rarely give a book 5 stars. I loved this book from start to finish! Can’t wait to read the next ones.

Great book, but schizophrenic. I really enjoyed reading this book… It was nice to get a different perspective on magic and some interesting ideas about military life and monkhood. The only thing I did not like about this book is the constant change in perspectives. While sometimes changing perspectives is good… It was done every other chapter and you would really be enjoying one characters story and then all of a sudden he would go to a different character.

Recommended. One of the better books I've read this year and looking forward to the next installment. Have recommended it to several friends and for what it's worth I'm recommending it to you. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Fun read but frustratingly dumb characters. The series is worth a read if you're out of better options. The writing is decent and the story keeps you engaged, but the characters are just really dumb. They are archetypes we see time and again in fantasy works, but the worst part is they just make the most boneheaded decisions over and over. Maybe the author couldn't think of a way to create drama without having his characters get themselves into trouble time and again. It's a maddening experience for a reader trying to get into the protagonists. I'd give the series higher marks if I wasn't constantly yelling in my mind at the characters that they are idiots.

Good book for fantasy fans. Enjoyed this book. Great first effort by the author. Hoping one of the characters on the next installment learns some new skills.

Bad start didn't finish. This shock-jock of an author should cut out the nonsense and get on with it. The knife he cuts into an innocent daughter's heart should have been used to cut out the opening chapters instead.
