Anlässlich des 60. Todestages von Thomas Mann gibt dieses E-Book einen abwechlsungsreichen Überblick über einen der wohl wichtigsten deutschen Schriftsteller des 20. Jahrhunderts. ZEIT-Artikel aus über 50 Jahren (von 1954 bis heute) zeichnen ein lebendiges Bild von seinem Leben und Wirken sowie von der Rezeption seiner Werke in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten.
Das erste Kapitel porträtiert den Nobelpreisträger im Spiegel seiner Zeit: seine Kindheitsliebe zu Travemünde, seine Deutschlandreisen nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg oder sein Leben im US-amerikanischen Exil.
Der zweite Teil widmet sich seiner Familie und ihrer oft tragischen Geschichte: seinem Bruder Heinrich, zu dem Thomas ein sehr schwieriges Verhältnis hatte; seiner Frau Katia, die für ihren Ehemann auf eine eigene Karriere verzichtete; seinen Kindern Klaus, Erika und Golo, die immer im Schatten ihres berühmten Vaters standen.
Das letzte Kapitel beschäftigt sich mit dem Werk des großen Schriftstellers und beinhaltet ausgewählte Rezensionen und zeitgenössische Betrachtungen. Besprochen werden unter anderem sein Spätwerk „Der Erwählte“, der Hochstapler-Roman „Felix Krull“, der von Musik und Goethe inspirierte Roman „Doktor Faustus“ und sein berühmtestes Werk „Die Buddenbrooks“.
