En El nacimiento de las instituciones, Enrique Krauze recupera una de las historias más apasionantes del México contemporáneo: en los turbulentos años posteriores a la Revolución, cuando se temía una invasión por parte de Estados Unidos, el presidente Plutarco Elías Calles emprendió una vasta obra de reconstrucción material e institucional. Hombres como Alberto J. Pani, Luis Montes de Oca, Manuel Gómez Morin, Moisés Sáenz y Gonzalo Robles, entre otros, se encargaron de realizar esa obra creativa con tiempo limitado y pocos recursos, pero también con claridad, profesionalismo y patriotismo. Todos ellos tenían conciencia de la destrucción humana que habían atestiguado en el ciclo más violento de la Revolución y sentían la responsabilidad de dar sentido a ese dolor con una verdadera transformación económica y social. Mucho de lo logrado sucumbió debido a la crisis que sobrevino a causa de la caída de los precios del petróleo y la plata, la hostilidad de inversionistas y compañías petroleras extranjeras, y la voracidad de algunos políticos, por no mencionar el boicot religioso. Pero parte de aquel andamiaje sobrevivió y es el fundamento del México actual.
