"Freak" erzählt die Geschichte einer ungewöhnlichen Freundschaft zwischen dem riesigen Förderschüler Maxwell und dem kleinwüchsigen, hochbegabten Kevin. Als Kevin ins Nachbarhaus einzieht und den Kontakt zum geistig zurückgebliebenen Max sucht, ist dieser zunächst vorsichtig. Doch die anfängliche Skepsis weicht schnell, und zwischen den beiden Jungen, die unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnten, entwickelt sich eine tiefe Freundschaft. Kevin und Max werden zu einem starken Team, das sich gegen Jugendgangs zur Wehr setzen kann und zusammen durch dick und dünn geht. Während Max Kevin auf seinen Schultern trägt und ihm so seine Beine leiht, bringt Kevin Max das Lesen bei und unterstützt ihn in der Schule. Aber dann wird Max entführt und Kevin muss alles daransetzen, seinen besten Freund zu befreien.
