Przyszły dyktator, Syn Wielkiego Przywódcy i jednocześnie szef Departamentu Propagandy i Agitacji, Kim Dzong-Il zleca porwanie reżysera filmowego Shin Sang-Ok i jego byłej żony, aktorki Choi Eun-Hee. Celem porwania jest zmuszenie Shina do pracy na rzecz północno-koreańskiego przemysłu filmowego. Po pięciu latach więzienia, indoktrynacji, głodzenia i tortur oraz dwukrotnej próbie ucieczki Shin ulega sile perswazji aparatu Kim Dzong-Ila. Przez kolejne 3 lata Shin i Choi pozornie służą systemowi, planując jednocześnie spektakularną ucieczkę. Ten plan realizują dopiero w 1986 roku.
Fascynująca i momentami surrealistyczna opowieść o Korei Północnej w przełomowym momencie jej historii. Książka o narodzie, który odizolował się od całego świata i obłędzie jego przywódcy zniewolonego przez własne aspiracje.
