Bad pacing (some small spoilers). (Minor Spoilers) My main problem with this book is that the pacing felt entirely off. Mare and Denna’s relationship seemed to jump from being somewhat friends to wildly in love, without showing us much of that transition. Most of the book felt very uneventful, up until the end where everything happened at once. Also, the impact of different character’s deaths was hardly shown. I was expecting to see a lot more grieving. I wish there would have been more of a focus on the growth of Mare and Denna, and more plot points, instead of just discussion after discussion of the Recusants and Zumorda.

Truly Amazing. This book was my gateway into the wlw fantasy genre. Coulthurst does a wonderful job balancing world building, character development, and romance. Dena and Mare’s growing affection is realistic but also infatuating. I wish I could read this book for the first time again, to experience its enchanting prose once more.

Possible show?. I personally say this book series would make a great tv show. It has enough drama and magic that would make a show just sizzle with excitement. It would be “lit”.

Heartwarming. This was exactly the kind of story that I was looking for when I picked it up. It’s exactly like its description, an old tale with a new twist. There’s nothing groundbreaking about this tale, and it was predictable from time to time. The pacing was sometimes great, and sometimes questionable. What I loved most about it, are the characters. I think Audrey Coulthurst did a great job bringing emotional depths to these characters. Her vivid descriptions and sense of adventure kept me reading for hours. The queer representation brought a warm feeling to my heart which brings me to recommend this book to anyone!

AHHHH. I read it all in one day and I loved it so much. The relationships, politics, and facts were so well thought out and so realistic. There is so much depth to it, which is so important. It requires thinking, empathy, and a love for justice (and romance) to truly love it. I love books like that. I love it I love it I love it. Also I love both Mare's and Denna's characters so much and they are so perfect for each other. Just AHHHH. Thank you, author, for bringing this wonderful book into existence.

Totally recommend. I read most of this book in one day. I was really good and had really we written believable relationships. My only complaint is that more people don’t know about it. I would definitely recommend this book
