Hero in the Highlands by Suzanne Enoch Book Summary

WILD AT HEART
Scotland, 1812: He’s ferocious and rugged to the bone, an English soldier more at home on the battlefield than in any Society drawing room. And when Major Gabriel Forrester learns that he’s inherited the massive Scottish Highlands title and estate of a distant relation, the last thing he wants to do is give up the intensity of the battlefield for the too-soft indulgences of noble life. But Gabriel Forrester does not shirk his responsibilities, and when he meets striking, raven-eyed lass Fiona Blackstock, his new circumstances abruptly become more intriguing.
Like any good Highlander, Fiona despises the English—and the new Duke of Lattimer is no exception. Firstly, he is far too attractive for Fiona’s peace of mind. Secondly, his right to “her” castle is a travesty, since it’s been clan Maxwell property for ages. As the two enter a heated battle of wills, an unexpected passion blazes into a love as fierce as the Highlands themselves. Is Fiona strong enough to resist her enemy’s advances—or is Gabriel actually her hero in disguise?

“It’s time to fall in love with Suzanne Enoch.”

Got a little slow at times. It started out great but way too much internal dialogue. Just a lot of repetitive thoughts. And I noticed a few sayings that were too modern for the time period. One of those is; not for all the tea in China. After reading that line I did a quick google search and sure enough that phrase wasn't uttered until 100 years after this story took place.

We know what society was like during Regency. If they language of"ye", "nae" and "aye" weren't used, this story could have been 2016. There's more to loving historical novels than horses and gowns. Part of the thrill is social expectations and propriety.

Hero in the Highlands. I grab up every book of Suzanne's I can find.I am glad I chose this one. She has a way of giving the reader a history lesson while they read her stories. This is an era of Wellington and Napoleon and Gabriel made Major and finds he has a lost uncle who dies and gives him the title Duke. Spoiler. He and his aide-de-camp rode to Scotland to see what the problem with his Castle is. Spoiler. This story is full of action. It goes from war to dealing with troubles with another Clan. Fiona is the steward and runs the property. Spoiler. He is in for a wild ride as a Sassanach going against a Scottish Chief. I liked this story. It shows you how everyone lived and worked back in those days. I wish I could get to Scotland. I had a problem in not being able to put it down. I almost needed tissues but I made it through. I hope you will give this book a chance. Enjoy choosing to read this book! I have this book for an honest review for NetGalley.

Delicious &a Delightful!. Loved it! Dazzling, Delicious and Delightful. This is a well crafted historical romance filled with humor, intrigue, conspiracy, war and wonderful sharp and sassy banter as well as charming romance. The stunningly beautiful detailed descriptive narrative, places the reader firmly in 1800's Scottish highlands. I felt it brought the story to life being surrounded by the sights, sounds and character of the breathtaking surroundings as well as the dialect. This story will take you away to a beautiful and historical rundown castle that has been plagued with mishaps and ghosts as well as a family curse. But most of all I immensely enjoyed the charming romance between the determined War hero Gabriel and the sharp and sassy witted, strong willed Fiona. Their relationship is fascinating and humorous as well as full of some delicious delights. I can't wait for the next in this series. Highly Recommended!! I received a ARC though Netgalley and I voluntarily agreed to post a honest review of my own thoughts of this story.

Good. 3.75* Hero in the Highlands is a good start to an interesting new series. Gabriel Forrester a fears soldier is called away from his duty and told he is the last heir to a Dukedom of a relative he never knew or heard of. Gabriel has known nothing but war for the last twelve years, what's he supposed to do with all this unwanted titles and wealth. After meeting with his now lawyers he learns that he has two we'll run English estates and one Scottish estate with a curse on it that's run by someone who threatens harm instead of sending proof of the estates wellbeing. The soldier in Gabriel sees a battle that needs taken care of so he heads for the highlands. Upon arriving he meets Fiona Blackstock a fiery lass who sends him on a merry chase with lies and half truths. Fiona knows that Gabriel will not stay and she needs to be rid of him before he finds out all that's amiss. Slowly Fiona sees Gabriel for the kind hearted soldier and Gabriel she a woman who's strong and intelligent and he can't get her out of his mind. Terrible things keep happening and Gabriel and Fiona set out to get to the end of it. There's good suspense and twists and turns that kept me interested until the end. I have loved the books that I have read by Suzanne Enoch and I did enjoy this on but it's not on of my favorite. With that being said I am looking forward to the next book in the series "My One True Highlander".

A Humorous, Well-Written and Touching Story. Hero In The Highlands is a well-crafted, emotionally charged, historical fiction romance. I became involved with the characters and cared about them, right from the start. The author’s ability to describe the Highlands and capture the essence of the Scottish people, their culture, and dialect, made this book come alive for me. Fearless war hero, Major Gabriel Forrester, was known as the Beast of Bussaco. He was also recognized for his loyalty and was honored by his soldiers. Gabriel thought that serving in the Crown’s Army was the only thing that he wanted to do in life. But, that was before, he met Fiona, a beautiful, fiery, Scottish lass, near Lattimer Castle. At first, Gabriel wanted nothing to do with his newly acquired title, Duke of Lattimer. He had no use for polite society and their extravagant lifestyle. Gabriel thrived instead, on the life-pumping, adrenaline rush that fighting in a bloody war battle gave him. But, the inherited title of Duke, was now his, whether he wanted it or not. So, Gabriel established a new plan. He was going to set his acquired estates in order, starting with Lattimer, and then return to the life he was accustomed to, in the Army. The condition of Lattimer Castle was deplorable and seemed to be more trouble than it was worth; yet, Gabriel couldn’t bring himself to leave it, or Fiona, Lattimer’s sassy steward. Although Fiona’s sharp tongue, was usually aimed at Gabriel, he still found the bold and flippant woman, irresistible. Fiona knew that she was in trouble when she started to think of the Duke as a hero, instead of an English devil, who needed to be booted back, to wherever he had come from. Gabriel was the only man, though, who ever listened and valued her opinion. Fiona knew that she should be hating and conspiring against the Sassenach, but, she couldn’t stop herself from falling in love with him. Hero In The Highlands is a delightful read, full of romance, witty banter, and well-developed characters. I loved Fiona’s kindness toward her tenants, and Gabriel’s willingness to do whatever was necessary to care for them. The book tugged at my heart and made me laugh. I loved every page of this humorous, well-written, and touching story. I recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction romance. I look forward to reading more books written by this talented author. I received this ARC from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

the contrast between these two was marked. I read and loved Some Like it Scot from this author, and hoped that I would find the same humor, befuddlement and intrigue in this new series starter. Fortunately, I found many of those beloved elements in this story, with two very different and occasionally difficult characters. Gabriel was wonderful: full of honor, good intentions and a truly stand up man, revered by his regiment and brother’s in arms. While he’s busy garnering victories in the war, he discovers that he has inherited a title and lands in Scotland, with no way to refuse the request. With several missives gone unanswered, he leaves the battlefields to travel to Scotland, looking to settle things with his steward and decide what to do. Fiona has been managing the Lattimore lands since her brother’s disappearance, and has little interest in cowtowing to some Sassenach interloper. She’s a bit rough around the edges, perhaps a bit too modern for her time: unmarried, free with her body and determined to drive her own life path. She’s admittedly treacherous and distrustful, more than a bit dishonest and her attitude slides from spoilt child to scheming courtesan in the blink of an eye. Dislikable heroines are often a death knell to a book, and the contrast between these two was marked, until bits of Fiona’s insecurities and history start to come forward. I never did come to love her, but I understood her AND Gabriel’s desires for her: his need to protect and care, to smooth the way and to assume his rightful place as she starts to see his bone-deep honorable streak. When the two band together to focus on the troubles plaguing the castle rather than their own sparks, their attraction sparks naturally and leads to plenty of unconsciously planned moments full of spark and heat. Humor also works its way through the story, and I would say that sticking with this story purely for Gabriel will bring plenty of rewards. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
