The Girl Before by J.P. Delaney Book Summary

THE GLOBAL BESTSELLER • Soon to be a BBC One and HBO Max limited four-part series, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw (The Morning Show; Misbehaviour) and multiple Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Emmy-nominated actor David Oyelowo (Selma; Les Misérables)

“A pitch-perfect novel of psychological suspense” (Lee Child) that spins one woman’s seemingly good fortune, and another woman’s mysterious fate, through a kaleidoscope of duplicity, death, and deception

Please make a list of every possession you consider essential to your life.

The request seems odd, even intrusive—and for the two women who answer, the consequences are devastating.

EMMA
Reeling from a traumatic break-in, Emma wants a new place to live. But none of the apartments she sees are affordable or feel safe. Until One Folgate Street. The house is an architectural masterpiece: a minimalist design of pale stone, plate glass, and soaring ceilings. But there are rules. The enigmatic architect who designed the house retains full control: no books, no throw pillows, no photos or clutter or personal effects of any kind. The space is intended to transform its occupant—and it does.

JANE
After a personal tragedy, Jane needs a fresh start. When she finds One Folgate Street she is instantly drawn to the space—and to its aloof but seductive creator. Moving in, Jane soon learns about the untimely death of the home’s previous tenant, a woman similar to Jane in age and appearance. As Jane tries to untangle truth from lies, she unwittingly follows the same patterns, makes the same choices, crosses paths with the same people, and experiences the same terror, as the girl before.

Praise for The Girl Before

“Dazzling, startling, and above all cunning—a pitch-perfect novel of psychological suspense.”—Lee Child

“The Girl Before generates a fast pace. . . . [J. P.] Delaney intersperses ethics questions on stand-alone pages throughout the book. . . . The single most ingenious touch is that we’re not provided either woman’s answers.”—The New York Times

“J. P. Delaney builds the suspense.”—Vanity Fair

“Immediate guarantee: You will not be able to put this book down. . . . Fans of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train will realize that there’s not only more where that came from, but it’s also more thrilling.”—American Booksellers Association

Kept me on the edge!. Great book that kept me guessing till the last page, usually when I read mysteries I guess the story plots ending in the first few chapters but this time I never saw the ending till it unfolded.. I also Loved how the book told two separate stories with two characters but both characters stories were tangled together, I only wish that the ending had been more clear cut because I never like to be left hanging to guess how things turn out..

Good. Loved the book until the end, end was not quite what I expected, after so many problems a happy ending is what I expected. But it was good reading

The Girl Before. This book is so brilliant on so many levels. At first I thought it was going to be predictable but then I realized--as JP Delaney said in an interview--it's a story that's been told before, but we want to see if the second character is going to fall into the trap that the first girl did. I wanted to know what was going to happen but I didn't want it to end. SPOILER ALERT!!!! This is the first thriller I've ever read that I couldn't shake--because the bittersweet ending just broke my heart. I was very upset for Jane that the baby turned out to have Down syndrome after all, even though I know it had to be that way--otherwise the whole story would all have been too neatly tied up in a bow. Having grown up in a family with a disabled child who is no longer with us, it just really strikes a chord with me. I love how Jane's decision is just such a real situation--how when faced with certain realities everything changes--how initially on paper a decision to have an abortion may seem straightforward, but as Jane says when she meets Toby, how she can't imagine not letting this beautiful life be lived, that he is beautiful. And the way she imagines sitting down with him in a few years and telling him about Isabel, who turns out to be the real "Girl Before."

MUST READ. It's gonna be hard to find a new book to read after this one!!!

Great!!!!!. Really good book!!

Just OK. MEH

The Girl Before. This book was exhilarating and heartbreaking. It is written in such an intriguing way, it jumps back and forth and I couldn’t put it down. Amazing work.

Too good. Incredibly written, captivating. Better than most of the so-called bestsellers.

Couldn’t put it down.. Absolutely thrilling.

Couldn't stop reading!. Finished it in 3 days - great short chapters that are page turners. Highly recommend.

Not worth the $$$. It was terrible. Can’t believe the good reviews for this book. Save your money!

A thriller that builds with each turn of the page.... 1. I am so glad to see that this book is being made into a film. Can't wait! 2. This book was SO very good. I could rave on and on and on about it, but I wouldn't want to become cumbersome--Edward wouldn't like that--(insider), so I'll just say that if you enjoy thrillers that build LITERALLY as you turn each page, this book is for Y O U! 3. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because of the drop at the end of the book and the ending itself! I wanted more, but am satisfied with what I got when it all comes down to it. 4. This review is in the form of a list because Edward would like it neatly arranged, just so. :)

Great story. It was a page turner for sure. I can't wait to see it come to life on the big screen

The Girl Before. Could not put this book down!!

Can't wait for the film adaption. When a book can pull you in so much you are playing out the movie in your head and picking out the characters, I'm already waiting patiently for the next novel. Loved the plot and the way the author pulls you along, right till the very end, and still you really have no clue what the end really looks like. Thoroughly enjoyed this one!

It kept my interest.. Very interesting. Though The Who done it was a little in satisfying.

Hard to read. Didn't like the way it was written without dialogue just rephrasing what people said.

Can’t put down. couldn’t put the book down ! Had to share it with many friends as a must read!

No preview 😒. Really

Easy read that held my interest. Kept me interested, although, became predictable as I got closer to the end

Captivating Parallel Plot Structure. This book has an Incredible woven plot and interesting, surprising characters. The only downside was the style of the writing. Written from a 1st person perspective (which did work well), I couldn't get over the "he goes..." and "she's like..." to report speech.

Antic-climatic and unoriginal. Yes, I couldn't put it down but I skimmed it as fast as I could to see what happened and then regretted it when I got to the end. Agree with the last reviewer - don't waste your money or time

Very odd. Not really my style of reading I guess

Not a fan.. I bought this because it was on sale, and it happened to have good reviews. Honestly, it was like a better written Fifty Shades with a murder plot twist. Emma's behavior made little to no sense. She went from being an average girl experiencing a trauma, to a pathological liar with an eating disorder in about as long as it takes to take a breath. There are problems with every single character in this book. Anyway, it was a very solid "meh" for me.

The Girl Before. I loved the book. It is well written by a very gifted writer. Stay with it. The book asked many questions. It left me with a question of my own. How shall the young remain sinless?/Psalm 119:9 Who wants to remain sinless 00000 Obeying God's Word Fill in the circle that best suits you. Who wants to be sinless far left. Obeying God's Word far right.

Weird. I dunno, I just couldn't get in to it. I read the whole thing and it was just bizarre. Couldn't connect with any characters...not really suspenseful or psychological. Hmmmm, wouldn't recommend

Excellent!!!. Great book with edge of your seat suspense and many twists and turns.

Easy Read. A super easy to read book, but not the five star thriller that I was hoping for, with a somewhat weird ending. The book kind of started to remind me of 50 Shades and I really wasn't into it. The good thing is, it's strays away from The Girl on the Train and A Woman in the Window (so no alcoholic who can't remember a crime like all the other thrillers coming out). There aren't really any likable characters in this book except for Jane, but then towards the end, you kind of stop liking her too. There were a couple of twists that really surprised me and that's mostly what I look for in a thriller. Wasn't a book that I couldn't put down, but it was also easy to keep reading with spare time.

Almost great. Loved the description of the architectural philosophy of Monkford. Also very good character development of him. Really kept me turning the pages. Great format of 2 women's story's in alternating chapters. One criticism, which I have encountered on another book lately, (The Weight of Blood)...slowly builds suspense until the key plot revelation...then it seems hurried to the end...as though they've run out of ideas. Definitely worth reading regardless.

Enjoyable. I enjoyed reading this book! I was second guessing myself the entire time. The ending ended up being a little too anticlimactic for me, but I still enjoyed it.

Great Beach Read. I read this book on the beach in Jamaica. Great book with lots of twists and turns. Very well-written!

Absolutely spectacular.. Cannot be put down!!

wow wow wow !. super amazing book. enjoyed very , in love with the ending !!

Idk...... Parts were riveting. But the end felt contrived. An ending for the sake of an ending that pushed the boundaries without fully explaining the motivation behind the characters actions. The Twist weren't connected to one another in any sensible ways. However the good parts were really solid. Interested to see how the movie deals with these inconsistencies.

Fantastic read. Completely obsessed. I couldn’t stop reading!

Predictable and unpredictable. I felt that this book was really going for the Gone Girl vibe while trying to throw in some 50 Shades-type of explicit scenes to keep the reader interested in the first half. As you start to unravel the mystery of the home and it's occupants, it really becomes a mess and I feel that the author threw too many curveballs for any of this to make any sense and end on a pleasing note. None of the characters were consistent and I felt that the last half was rushed and quite disappointing. Great to pass the time, but not a memorable read.

Amazing read, couldn’t put down. Interesting story line of a woman who moves into a smart, well designed home with a strict set of rules, strangely enough she looks quite similar to the woman who lived and died there before. I have recommended this book to all my friends and my book club everyone cannot get enough of this writer, highly recommend!

Just Alright. Plot was mediocre, characters were bland.

Didn't want to put it down!. It takes me awhile to get used to the back and forth style of writing, but this book kept me wanting to find out what happens next. Characters were well defined and the plot twist was great.

Wasted opportunity. This book starts off really good but gets progressively worse; the plot was not well developed into the suspenseful Page turner I expected. When you get close to the end it feels like the author got in a hurry and just wanted to be done with it It had potential to be a good thriller but I felt really cheated by the hurried ending. Don't waste your time, too expensive for such a big disappointment

Very well done. Definitely a worthwhile read.

The girl before. Good plot, just somewhat disjointed

No. I didn't like this book at all. The language was immaturely written and it jumped around too much with not enough detail. The story went like this "I said and then he said and she was like and then I said and he said and she said then I said........" I think you get it

The Girl Before. This book started out as a good read! It quickly tumbled as one of the worst books I have read! Too much vulgarity and unnecessary sex descriptions! Further it degrades women. It pictures us as needy and unable to stand on our own two feet! In my opinion a waste of time and money!

Meh. The book was a quick read. I read it fast due to the other reviews, to be honest. They spoke of a HUGE plot twist. The twist was small and predictable. I’m upset I wasted my time reading this. It also couldn’t make up its mind between futuristic and 50 shades of grey and a crime novel. Weird.

The Girl Before. Don’t waste your time.

I couldn't put it down!. This book is such a page turner! A must read.

Jane's ending ruined it for me. The book was SO GOOD until all of a sudden it wasn't. I got to the point where I couldn't put it down and HAD to keep going until Jane's last couple of chapters. It's unfortunate but the ending made me feel like it was a waste of time, corny, and not very insightful of the character's future. Disappointing end.

Clearly written by a man. He’s not very good at writing from a females perspective. Some things are downright wrong, especially his pregnancy facts.
