Punktem zwrotnym w jego życiu staje się spotkanie z żydowskim lekarzem, którego kunszt przewyższa nikłe umiejętności średniowiecznych medyków. Odtąd każdym krokiem Roba kieruje jedno tylko pragnienie: dotrzeć do Isfahanu i zostać uczniem sławnego perskiego lekarza, Ibn Siny, w świecie zachodnim zwanego Awicenną.
