Augustus by John Williams Book Summary
Kejsar Augustus, som styrde det romerska riket när hela världen skulle skattskrivas, som det står i Bibeln (det vill säga vid Kristi födelse), markerade övergången från republik till kejsarmakt i Rom. När han ärvde makten efter sin adoptivfar Julius Caesar var han bara nitton år. Efter sjutton års maktstrider och samregerande med bland andra Marcus Antonius var han ensam härskare, och började sin långa regeringstid som antingen fridsfurste eller despot, beroende på från vilket håll man betraktar honom. Efter Caesar är han den mest berömda av Roms kejsare, och föremål för ständigt nya uttolkningar och fiktioner. Inte minst av John Williams. Hans roman Augustus beskriver i brevform hur Rom gick från våld och kaos till fred och relativt lugn under Augustus regeringstid. Det är ett porträtt som inte saknar skuggor, men som ger en bild av en människa, tecknat både med fantasi och lågmäld förståelse.
