Father Joseph Boenzi, faithful son of Don Bosco, provides the reader with a comprehensive study of Francis de Sales and his spirituality. As both a true scholar and disciple, Fr. Boenzi searches for every detail to make St. Francis and his friends come alive, and as a follower in the Salesian family he introduces the Saint as a model and most loveable companion. In addition to the life of Francis, Fr. Boenzi includes a masterful section on Francis’s spiritual theology and an accounting of his influence after his death.  If the main content of the book provides a detailed understanding for the general reader, it is the invaluable appendices that offer treasures for the researcher: a detailed time-line of Francis’s life parallel to a list of contemporary events (1567-1672); a description of other religious families related to Francis and Salesian spirituality; an extensive index of persons and their relationship to the saint.  The author’s select bibliography and detailed notes add to this wealth of information.  What he presents here speaks clearly of his extensive knowledge and warm affection for Francis de Sales, his Life and his Spirit.
