The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay Book Summary

Paul Tremblay’s terrifying twist to the home invasion novel—inspiration for the upcoming major motion picture from Universal Pictures

“Tremblay’s personal best. It’s that good.” — Stephen King

Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. Their closest neighbors are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road.

One afternoon, as Wen catches grasshoppers in the front yard, a stranger unexpectedly appears in the driveway. Leonard is the largest man Wen has ever seen, but he is young, friendly, and he wins her over almost instantly. Leonard and Wen talk and play until Leonard abruptly apologizes and tells Wen, “None of what’s going to happen is your fault.” Three more strangers then arrive at the cabin carrying unidentifiable, menacing objects. As Wen sprints inside to warn her parents, Leonard calls out: “Your dads won’t want to let us in, Wen. But they have to. We need your help to save the world.”

Thus begins an unbearably tense, gripping tale of paranoia, sacrifice, apocalypse, and survival that escalates to a shattering conclusion, one in which the fate of a loving family and quite possibly all of humanity are entwined. The Cabin at the End of the World is a masterpiece of terror and suspense from the fantastically fertile imagination of Paul Tremblay.

Interesting Idea. Ends flat.. Well crafted, easy read. But I didn’t like the ending. Left me unsatisfied. Hollow and weirdly predictable at the very end, but a good “ride” until then.

Suspenseful. Great read through the whole book. Only disappointment was the ending in my opinion. But we all differ and maybe everyone else will love the ending.

A Good Read. I read the reviews before I downloaded the book. They were right, the ending sucked. Good read, yet it felt like so much detail and extra unneeded stuff went into the filler, that the end was rushed and unfinished. I like stuff to be left to the imagination, but it felt like the ending was just unfinished. But then I thought about it all…. And this book reminds me of current times…people being brainwashed by social media to believe certain things…. Extremism being blared through the media…people that will believe the rabbit holes they are being drug into…..that’s what this story reminded me of in the end. Being vague so not to give this story away

Very interesting. Great book. Creative idea. Definitely worth your time.

Way better than the movie. I read this one very quickly. I couldn’t put it down. However I think the mental state you read the book is important. It can be very polarising, as the ending is not what you expect. Also, there is a lot that isn’t exactly described, but that’s essentially the same as how the main characters are seeing the world. They are just as confused as you will be. But I love a really good ambiguous horror story.

Seriously?!. This was supposed to be “taut”, “terrifying”, etc. etc.? The only extreme thing about it was the gory and graphic depictions of violence. What a waste of time and money. Read to the end as I kept expecting that it would live up to the reviews. Ending was a big “What?”. Would rate it less than one star if that was an option.

Awesome. Awesome book!

Tarama/Jamie. I liked the narrative but was way to wordy at times! I caught myself skimming over passages overly talked about! Your audience is not whittles! Scale it back.

What?. The first half of this book was pretty good. Kept me in suspense. But then, Later on, toward the end, it was really weird how he was writing. One of the main characters Sabrina, was talking to Andrew, Eric, and Leonard. She was explaining to them why she was doing what she did. But it seemed like it switched back and forth from her explaining, to the author himself taking over And narrating for her, to her again. It was very weird and didn’t make any sense. And it dragged on longer than it needed to. It got boring and was hard for me to finish. I’m kinda upset that I wasted $14 on this book. Don’t waste your $$ on it.

Ending is terrible. I think leaving an open ended ending is a very lazy writing technique. It leaves the reader unsatisfied. This could have been a good story if there was not so much description and the plot moved a little faster. And the ending was terrible. Do not waste your money on this book. It took me 4 months to read and I’m a fast reader. Just not that interesting and now severely disappointed

The Cabin At The End Of The World. Good book, a little too gruesome and the ending was incredibly disappointing, like a deflated balloon.

Apocalyptic. This book took about two weeks to finish. I was not impressed with the storyline, as certain aspects were not explored. Also, I feel like the book just…ended. We needed at least a short epilogue.

Terrible story. What a stupid book. It was so blah, blah, blah. I had to force myself to keep reading just so I hadn’t totally wasted the money. Awful story, dud of an ending. Last one of this authors books I’ll read.

Thoroughly enjoyable and thought-provoking. A well-plotted and ingenious mix of pandemic and AI fiction. At times, weirdly prescient about our current situation in the middle of our coronavirus word. It’s long, but I enjoyed it from start to finish.

Terrible!. This book is so not good. Don’t waste your time or money.

Crazy good. Great storyline. I raced through it

Worth a read, looking for similar books. Honestly any bad review(s) this received was because of the ending. There’s too much left unanswered for a perfect rating but I believe this book was worth the read. Very anticlimactic ending for how suspenseful the book was overall though.

Riveting pace.. Exposes the depths of our fears and hopes and how they were seeded.

The Cabin at the End of the World. The plot was original and the book was entertaining but the characters sort of stalled out right when the reader was primed for the exciting conclusion. A bit disappointing.

Not a fan.. What?

Loved this book!. I read this because Stephen King gave it a good review. I’m so happy I did. I couldn’t put it down! I can’t wait to read more from this author!

So disappointing. This book had so much potential. Was left floundering at the end.....Wen deserved more.lindasreview

not worth it. fairly interesting at first, but quickly unravels into an unoriginal bore.

I feel so bad for Paul Tremblay - his work has always been masterful...until now :(. A great writer, one of my favorites, actually. But this is his first published work where I couldn’t find even ONE character or plot development worth any emotional investment. I finished reading it of course — I can’t stand people who only finish books if they enjoy every single chapter or whatever, that’s not how literature (or narrative storytelling in general) works...but I digress. I mean to say I knew I was in for a very messy & far too unfocused story that couldn’t punctuate — or in many cases simply realize — more than a few of the MANY statements about our current world’s horrors that exist so casually on the fringes of our everyday lives. Tremblay isn’t taking on just one set of fundamentalists or extremists, he’s not writing this book to finger-wag the intolerant bigots who very much exist in larger numbers than we’d like to admit, (as the protagonists of this novel include two married gay men with an adopted daughter, who by the way is sadly the best and worst monkey wrench in this novel; you could almost unravel the mess entirely by omitting her character completely but then it’s maybe a novella at most, likely a short story). Tremblay doesn’t quite pull off the Kubrickian style when your comes to nuclear doomsday scenarios, psychology of warfare, as well as having your entire life be threatened or your known reality shattered in front of you within the events of a single day/evening wherein the nature of survival: fight or flight competes with a nagging panic about what it all means to “be” and how could either you OR the rest of the world be insane without realizing it until this very moment. These are broad strokes, and just the surface of very densely explored subjects in Stanley Kubrick’s filmography — typically with just one or two being the focus of a single project. Here in Tremblay’s latest novel, however, they’re littered throughout a jumbled sequence of events dressed up as a (MUCH) tamer version of Michael Haneke’s brilliant home-invasion horror film(s), “Funny Games.” You’re left with a sense of incompletion. The notion that you were about to maybe explore some interesting territory while the razor-thin plot premise played out the ONLY way any decent home-invasion-horror story can, (which is sort of a spoiler I guess?)

Awful. Waste of time. Don’t bother. Seriously.

Good introduction to the author. I picked up this book in the airport. First time I'd heard of him. I thought the book was great. Sure, there were a few times the narrative was lost, but all in all a solid story about what we do for those we love and nice twist to the age old, one person you love for the loves of many. Me and husband ended up having a great discussion after I finished and anything that sparks a convo is a great read.

Like a poorly written TV series. Was quite a page turner at the start. Then…blah. The novel became tedious and in the end no true resolution to the torment of the characters. Simply put, dooms day gloom with out any boom. Lacking in development of finalities and too much description of scenery. Too much death without purpose. Glad I only paid eight dollars for the less than satisfying experience. It was like a bad TV series where you try to hang in there and then…seriously, that’s how this ends. Nope. Not a fan of this writing.

Intrigued Throughout. I could NOT put this book down. The story felt plausible, regressing into the art of fiction. Symbolism and its repercussions create the story. I absolutely enjoyed how the author transitions into perspectives, allowing the reader to dive into the mind of a character, yet, feeling invisible, standing right there in the cabin not knowing what will happen next.

heart felt. could see me in both of the main characters. loved it.

Terrible. Terrible

Couldn’t stop reading. This is a brilliant novel that’s so efficient in its telling that you don’t notice the hundred pages you’ve just finished. Shockingly brilliant.

Kind of disappointing. Took a long time for not much to happen. Flabby pacing and cop out ending.

Terrible ending. I never thought I'd miss Stephen Kings under the dome ending

I don’t recommend. Not good. I don’t recommend. Starts off okay, but then deteriorates into LONG descriptions of violence and characters’ thoughts with little plot development and an annoyingly enigmatic ending.

Exciting premise that wasn’t explored. This book is fun to read. Suspense is set up well and it really gets you excited to see how it ends. Unfortunately, you will be left disappointed. The author sets up so many questions that aren’t answered and you will be left not caring about the plot or any characters. I think he writes well, and I have heard good things about other works of his which I am excited to give a chance

Disappointed. The book was very suspenseful but the ending not rewarding. It was a cliffhanger that leaves nobody in suspense. The little girl is the only character with depth in this book.

Worst book I ever read. Terrible story plot. 0 intrigue. Absolutely no climax. Awful awful awful conclusion. How can a book be THIS bad?? Why is this classified as mystery? There is no mystery in this book whatsoever. Waste of time.

Not a fan of the ending. Good page turner, definitely kept the momentum going throughout the whole book. I get the ending but I would have liked it more with an actual conclusion. When I read horror I’m not interested in artistic interpretation.

Meh…. Terrible ending in that it didn’t end. Nothing was answered. As another reviewer said - I want an actual ending, not an artistic interpretation

Intense!. I haven’t read a book this intense in many, many years. It is a gut-wrenching take full of symbolism and meaning. This book will catch you, devour you, and spit you back out onto the cold pavement, alone and weary of the world. An excellent read, to say the least.
