Charlotte Perkins Gilman

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman Book Summary

Best known for the 1892 title story of this collection, a harrowing tale of a woman's descent into madness, Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote more than 200 other short stories. Seven of her finest are reprinted here. Written from a feminist perspective, often focusing on the inferior status accorded to women by society, the tales include "Turned," an ironic story with a startling twist, in which a husband seduces and impregnates a naïve servant; "Cottagette," concerning the romance of a young artist and a man who's apparently too good to be true; "Mr. Peebles' Heart," a liberating tale of a fiftyish shopkeeper whose sister-in-law, a doctor, persuades him to take a solo trip to Europe, with revivifying results; "The Yellow Wallpaper"; and three other outstanding stories. These charming tales are not only highly readable and full of humor and invention, but also offer ample food for thought about the social, economic, and personal relationship of men and women — and how they might be improved.

Psychological short worth reading. I don’t want to spoil anything and it is very short so read it.

Short but sweet. It kept me going to the very end. I loved it.

yea. weeeeird

Yellow Wallpaper. Early feminist story. Brilliant & spooky.

Astounding. The narrator draws you in and compels you to believe her. The story shows exactly how not to treat those who are experiencing mental health issues. It is relevant to this day.

Interesting. As a recommendation from a friend, this short story did not disappoint! I love the message and language used. I would recommend this to readers who enjoy stories with female protagonists that focus on the human condition.

Makes you think,so sad- spoilers ahead. I thought it was supposed to be about her husband making her worse and I guess that that is one interpretation, but it also seemed like she was going to go insane no matter what. The husband definitely had some toxic positivity, but I don’t think she was trapped in that room physically. She was trapped in her own mind. But it does make you think. The husband was controlling at times and he was too close to her to truly be her doctor.

A brilliant mind twister. There’s so many theories that can be attributed to this story, So -I’m re reading the yellow wallpaper and I think I know why her mental health declined She herself touches the paper,it heats up from the sun during the day and she has noticed a weird smell, it’s even in her hair… Victorian paper especially green and yellow colour contained arsenic- as she is stuck in that room for three weeks she will be absorbing the toxin in breath and skin She may have started with temporary nervous depression but I’ll bet she was poisoned with the arsenic which then exacerbated her mental health condition. As she said she didn’t sleep ( insomnia ) and looked at the patterns all night Didn’t eat ( anorexia ) except when at night with John her husband and that seemed under duress. Slept too much during the day after meals encouraged by John ( drowsiness ) Could it be as simple as a chemical poisoning ? You will just have to read this novella and seek answers for yourself ! I change my mind every time I read this ! Is there an abusive relationship ? Hysteria ? Or does the protagonist know exactly what she is doing ? A delicious little serving of insanity, designed to make you overthink, I myself, am beginning to see movement in my own wallpaper …. ;)

Bite-Size Horror. This story is such a fantastic expression of the horror that is being a woman, especially in the times Gilman was writing. Its surreal, casually horrifying, and so utterly weird. The history of the story itself is also really interesting. I recommend looking it up because the effect it had on the society of the time is surprisingly positive for such an overwhelmingly terrifying book. Its perfect for a half-hour read if you’re not massively attached to your sanity or current view of the world.

So so good. So good, for the time it was written, such a hilarious almost sarcastic, angry, cry-laugh mockery of the utterly ridiculous structure in society and how women had no autonomy.
