H. P. Lovecraft gilt als der bedeutendste Autor unheimlicher Phantastik des 20. Jahrhunderts. Im angloamerikanischen Raum ist er längst als Klassiker anerkannt, und auf Deutsch liegt sein Werk in verschiedenen Ausgaben und Übersetzungen vor.
Sein Leben dagegen ist mehr als umstritten: Als "Einsiedler von Providence" wurde er bezeichnet, als Rassist und Menschenfeind. Dem steht entgegen, dass er sich sein Leben lang als Amateurjournalist innerhalb eines großen Bekanntenkreises bewegte. Außerdem hat er Zentausende von Briefen geschrieben, an Schriftstellerkollegen wie Robert E. Howard und Clark Ashton Smith und an "Fans" wie den "Psycho"-Autor Robert Bloch und den späteren Lovecraft-Verleger August Derleth.
Grundlage jeder ernsthaften Beschäftigung mit Lovecraft ist das Standardwerk "I am Providence: The Life and Times of H. P. Lovecraft" von S. T. Joshi , erstmals 1996 erschienen und, als definitive Ausgabe überarbeitet und erweitert, in zwei Bänden 2010. Diese materialreiche Biographie liegt nun zum ersten Mal in Deutsch vor.
