Baron von dem Knesebeck by Alexandra Eggena Book Summary

Karl Friedrich von dem Knesebeck was born in 1768 in Karwe, North-West of Berlin in the Mark Brandenburg.  He entered military service at the age of 15 under the Prussian King, Frederick the Great, as his father had during the Seven Year’s War.
Because of his knowledge in military tactics, the Duke of Brunswick had him join his staff during the Prussian expedition into France where Prussia together with Austria wanted to re-establish the Monarchy after the French Revolution.  During this time Karl wrote a proposal to institute a militia in Prussia, a so-called “Legion of Honor”, a concept that later formed the foundation for the reorganization of the Prussian Army.
During the Battle of Auerstedt in 1806,  Karl saved the Prussian King William III from being captured by Napoleon.  Later that year Karl’s strategic planning led to the defeat of one of Napoleon’s Armies in the Battle of Pultusk. He was awarded the “Pour le Merite” by the King of Prussia and promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel.
In 1807 Karl retired from the Army following the Treaty of Tilsit, and returned to private life on his estate in Karwe.  In 1812  Karl traveled to St. Petersburg on a mission to present his secret plan to defeat Napoleon to the Emperor Alexander I of Russia.  The Emperor was intrigued and put Karl’s plan into effect.  This led to the defeat of Napoleon in Russia.
After Napoleon’s retreat from Russia, Karl was promoted to Lieutenant General and served as Military Strategist and Advisor to King William III.  Karl’s plan for the Battle of Leipzig in 1813 led to the crushing defeat of Napoleon, who abdicated in 1814 and was exiled to the Island of Elba. Karl was further honored by receiving “Oak Leaves” of the “Pour le Merite” along with a Russian award of “The Order of Saint Vladimir.”
Karl’s final diplomatic role was to represent Prussia’s interests in settling issues arising from the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic Wars at the Congress of Vienna in 1815.
Karl returned from Vienna to Karwe where he married Adolphine von Klitzing in 1815 and developed friendships with poets and writers including Heinrich von Kleist and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He died in Karwe in 1848 at the age of 80.
