The Toll by Neal Shusterman Book Summary

In the highly anticipated finale to the New York Times bestselling trilogy, dictators, prophets, and tensions rise. In a world that’s conquered death, will humanity finally be torn asunder by the immortal beings it created?

Citra and Rowan have disappeared. Endura is gone. It seems like nothing stands between Scythe Goddard and absolute dominion over the world scythedom. With the silence of the Thunderhead and the reverberations of the Great Resonance still shaking the earth to its core, the question remains: Is there anyone left who can stop him?

The answer lies in the Tone, the Toll, and the Thunder.

Meh. I love the first two books. Don’t get me wrong. It’s just that I felt like Neal was kind of distracted while writing the end of the book. Like you think that Citra is going to start a revolution, and then she runs away. Like, that’s not really part of her lifestyle. I’m felt like it was cut off. I not sad or anything, just a tad bit disappointed.

Unique and Captivating. A truly wonderful end with unpredictable turns throughout. I’ve loved this trilogy throughout, and Shusterman ends it eloquently. Thank you for this story!

What an ending. After reading the first book, I was hooked. After the second, I was intrigued. Now after the third, I am glad I read all three books. Thank you author for this memory you have implanted in my head for the rest of my life.

Amazing. I absolutely love this series!!!! Beware though, this story is one of the good ones, which undoubtedly means you’ll be left with that hollow feeling after you’re done with it. You know what I mean. It’s completely worth it. I love everything about this. I want my own Thunderhead!

OMG!!!. what a perfect ending to this incredible series!! i love love love the way everything was wrapped up in the end, the way no ends were left loose, the closure it gives!! i had grown such an attachment to this series i was afraid that the ending would leave me feeling empty, but i’m so happy with the way it concluded. amazing book!

Not like the first 2 books. The third book in this series seems to take on a political agenda in gender identity. This book drags and gets side tracked on tangents. I really wanted to like this book but just couldn’t get into it. Sad because I really enjoyed the first 2 books.

I’m so excited for this ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ. This is gonna be a gr8 ending!!!

Suddenly political. I give this two stars because Neal Shusterman decided to write with a subtle political undertone throughout this third installment. The writing is much the same as the first two books in that it is based of a great premise in a defined world but rather blunt in its storytelling making me feel like the writing was rushed. If this series was a little more etched out and Shusterman took more time to ease the audience in and, of course, cut out all the politics. This would be a fantastic read. Till then, 2 stars.

Great book. Good plot, in a great story

The ending made me cry.. This book, this series is beautiful. The ending of this book had me happy crying, and I still am. It was so heartfelt, and I really think that everyone should always read a really good book like this. I feel, that even though I wished they kissed at the end, it was quite, the perfect, most glorious, tender ending ❤️❤️❤️

Sad. I sad it’s not out😭

11/10. I saw other reviews complaining about gender fluidity being added to the third book, and i think that it made it a whole lot better. very different than what i expected, but i couldn’t be happier with the ending!

Phenomenal ending to a phenomenal trilogy!. Neal Shusterman delivers one of the best trilogies in years with the Arc of a Scythe. He makes us question morals, humanity, life, death, and relationships and how we as humans fit in the world. He creates a beautiful world and an incredible, riveting story. The characters are amazing and the story fits together like a puzzle that pleases and baffles the read. 10/10 must read

Good. Good

Loved it. I really loved this book but I will be sad if their isn’t a forth they are just so good I read this one in about a day I just can’t put it down.

The Toll=the pinnacle of modern literature (among other things lol). Why. Won’t. The. Sample. Button. Woooooorrrrrrrkkkkk Lol have a nice day if you’re reading this I can’t wait for this book

AHHHHHHHHH. Calling it highly anticipated is the understatement of the millennium. I can still hear the Thunderhead’s screams.

Unfocused (no spoilers). I have enjoyed both of the other books in this series and this book is no different. However, I do not like this book because it is a well written book. It has several major flaws that hold the book back. The biggest problem is the lack of focus of the book. By this point there are so many characters in different locations looking for different goals. Major characters disappeared for major sections of the book. A book like this should have a clear through line with a clear goal. If it weren’t for the page numbers, I wouldn’t have had any idea how close the characters were to achieving their goals. It made it difficult to recall and describe the plot. Another issue is that many of the plot lines failed to amount to anything. Without spoiling, two of the characters goals amounts to no affect to the end of the book. Even the events of previous books seem to have an issue with not sticking between books. Finally, there are the twists. There are many twists in this book, but there often don’t understand where they are coming from. Characters make decisions that are out of character or confusing about the connections to their goals. I liked this book because it was more of the universe but I think it could have been better in terms of structure and plot.

10/10. I don’t give amazing ratings lightly but the entire series is a must read.

Fantastic. Simply one of the best series I have ever read. This book flawlessly ties up everything we’ve ever been introduced to. Brilliant work, one of the best books of our generation!

Amazing Trilogy. The series’s main plot twist started in the second book but it continued on to this one and its amazing. This whole series has had lots of thought put into it and it’s not like other YA dystopian/utopian series.

Captivated. My Teens read this books and out of curiosity I picked it up. I was captivated and could not stop reading, I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 books.

PLEASE WRITE ANOTHER BOOK. pls?

Praise Be. This long awaited finale to the Arc of a Scythe series frickin rules

I want more. I LOVE this series! I LOVE this book!!! I am so exited for Neal to make another one! This book was the highlight to my new quarantine life!!!

The End. Well, so marks the end of an adventure. What a ride. The plot, the growing characters, the emotional end. I want to talk about the book but that’d be spoiling it so I won’t, I’ll just say... worth it. I’m tearing up just thinking about it. Go read it... now.

Good End. It’s been a bit since I finished reading the book, but I loved it.

I thought it was alright. Glad I read the book but only to see how the series ended. Besides that I personally wasn’t a huge fan. It was entertaining, but there were so many plots and so many character pov’s that I feel like it was too much. A couple of the plots were done very well from beginning to end, but several lacked in many areas since there was just so much going on. I thought the ending was okay, but very predictable and somewhat anticlimactic. Definitely not as good as the first two but still worth the read in my opinion.

This would make a great movie or 3. These books have gotten me back into reading, loved every second of it.

love the series. Honestly, I love this series. The power struggle is insane. Greyson storyline is one that you will need to be patient with but it is worth it in my opinion. It may not be the most exciting but it is interesting. Scythe Rand’s story line surprises me each time although she may not be the MAIN character. Also, I enjoy the way the books end because in the final chapters you can sort of see it play out like a movie right in front of you.

I loved this series!. The worlds created…the characters brought to life! Based on an immortal human world, where population is controlled by scythes with a quota of gleaning…and how this system starred to go awry. The first book moved slow at times, but get over the hump and you will be binging these books!

Best one yet (No Spoilers. I couldn’t put this down! It was so amazing to see where there lives ended up. The ending is well worth it!!

The best way to finish a series. I was so upset when I finished the book that I cried. I didn’t want the book to end. It was so good. Although, I would like to see the story carry on from the ending (you can do SO much with this story and it would be absolutely amazing!) I loved this series so much. Also I am excited for the possible movie that could be coming out (I really hope if Disney is producing it that they don’t destroy like they did A Wrinkle in Time 😒) but I think it would be easier to make a tv series instead.

CANT WAIT!!!!!. I can’t wait until this book comes out I wince it would be tomorrow lol. But I must say I must press the pre-order button But honestly this is probably my favorite book series ever.

Solid.. A great ending to a great trilogy.

Great book. I love it. Highly recommended.

The perfect bow of an amazing trilogy!. As the title say this is the perfect bow of one of the greatest trilogy’s made. It was a roller coaster of love and hate. This series is a must read for everyone who is able to read at this level. I never wanted it to end and that goes for all of the books in this trilogy. What a perfect ending for a perfect series!

🥺( SPOILERS). The whole arc of a scythe series has got to be one of my favorite series. I can’t wait for the movie (btw it’s being produced by Universal). I cried at the end especially when Rowan made the decision to stay alive for 117 years and then turn a corner. I really wanted him to stay in the cold with Citra.. but that didn’t happen. I definitely cried at the end when Citra said “When was that” and Rowan said “Only a moment ago” .On the upside I was glad Rand put Tyger back together and finally got rid of Goddard. I was also pleased with the joke “Only idiots build walls” 😂. Overall it was an emotionally book. I’m still recovering from the pain and saddens me to think that I will never read from Citra or Rowans p.o.v again.

Very Impressive. The Toll was well worth the wait. I could have done without the many liberal left/LGBTQ-xyz... current political fodder. The story brings closure to our favorite characters in ways least expected. Definitely a must read series.

Beautiful. Everything about this book screams conclusion but yet leaves us… Spoilers I’m a literal new world Neal has outdone himself with this one and this series will certainly be a long time favorite of mine I recommend to anyone and everyone

Satisfying ending to an amazing trilogy. I read the first book on a whim and had to finish the series. I loved the entire journey and all the breadcrumb plots finally all coming together. However it was disappointing to read through the comments here and see people complaining about it being “political” or not needing the “lgbt” portion. Spoilers, lgbt people exist. We read books. If you’re so closed minded and scared of “politics” in books I recommend not reading YA Dystopian novels

Good. Great book! Would recommend. It has such good moments! 6 stars

The second half is a disaster. The first half of the book was great! Lots of excellent storylines going in interesting ways with lots of cliffhangers. Then it turned into what the heck is going on. Way too much was happening all at once. The ending was so much softer and boring. All of the spunky characters amounted to nothing. The end amounted to so little that it took away from the other two books.

Brings it all together. Excellent ending to a solid series

Amazing End. Amazing way to end the trilogy. Couldn’t have enjoyed it more. I was at the edge of my seat multiple times and mournful at others.

A fitting end to a fantastic story.. I enjoyed this series a great deal. More than most, if I am being honest. The various ideas and philosophies presented in the books brought on a great deal of thought on my part, and I enjoyed every minute of that in-depth thought process. Great stuff 👍🏻

What great read and value of my time.. This was my favorite of the three books. It was a great read, I really enjoyed reading it and I will suggest it to who ever wants a suggestion. You have to read the first two books first. I liked the beginning (first 1/3) of the first book, and the ending of the second (Last 2/3) of the second book, and I liked the whole third book.
