Nu bliver hans historie fortalt – også alle de ting, han udelod af sine erindringer – af en af rockens mest velestimerede forfattere, Philip Norman, der med Claptons velsignelse har fået adgang til hans nære familie og venner. Vi hører om hans både forkælede og traumatiske barndom og vilde ungdom i Swinging London i 60’erne, der gjorde ham til narkoman og alkoholiker og sendte ham ud i en selvdestruktiv dødsspiral, der først stoppede i midten af 90’erne, efter at han havde mistet sin fireårige søn i en ufattelig tragedie.
Centralt i fortællingen om Clapton står hans uforløste forhold til kvinder, ikke mindst moren, der forlod ham, da han var helt lille, og hustruen Pattie Boyd, som han ’stjal’ fra sin bedste ven, George Harrison, blot for at behandle hende endnu værre, end George havde gjort. Som kvindebedårer mødte han sin overmand i Mick Jagger, men når det gjaldt om at opføre sig hensynsløst og skamløst, overgik ingen Clapton. En stor, medrivende biografi, der kaster nyt lys over det komplekse menneske bag legenden.
