Tender Is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica Book Summary

Working at the local processing plant, Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans—though no one calls them that anymore.

His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the “Transition.” Now, eating human meat—“special meat”—is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing.

Then one day he’s given a gift: a live specimen of the finest quality. Though he’s aware that any form of personal contact is forbidden on pain of death, little by little he starts to treat her like a human being. And soon, he becomes tortured by what has been lost—and what might still be saved.

Meh. Mildly entertaining, and an interesting premise, but this was all sizzle and no steak. More disturbing imagery than actual depth or plot.

Decent. It was OK at best, I wouldn’t recommend it as a must-read, but if you have the time and want to feel disgust and disappointment then be my guest.

ow.. overall this is a gripping read that has you on the edge of your seat, it brings you joy and most definitely pain. if you read this and expect to smile you’ll instead be met unequivocal disappointment.

Numbingly boring and repetitive. There was absolutely no plot. Rubbish.

Sloppy. The author sets up plot points with conflict and never provides the reader with any resolution for those parts of the plot. The ending seemed like the author was trying to meet a deadline and didn’t properly plan out the ending. I thought the sudden ending was sloppy and did not do the story actual justice.

Astounding.. I read this in its entirety on a flight home from Mexico and I was stunned. I think I’m still processing.

horrifically beautiful, beautifully horrific. the ending will have u staring at the wall in shock

Eh.. it’s was okay.. I did enjoy reading this book. However, it was all over the place. The ending was rushed and the “plot twist” left me with more confusion than shock.

Shocked yet disappointed. I enjoy reading disturbing books, and this one definitely hit the mark for me. However there was a lack of foreshadowing and the ending was abrupt. I loved the shock factor but little led up to certain reactions. The timing toward the end was poorly done in my opinion but it was still worth the read.

Great short read. Couldn’t put it down.

Dark Places. The author visited some very dark corners of the imagination in order to write this book. It was vivid and nauseating. I recommend it to anyone who has a strong stomach and enjoys reading books that can shock and jolt their readers.

Heavy but thought provoking. great ending as well

Gross and disturbing , great plot twist. Im not usually grossed out by graphic things or gore but the way this book grossed me out. Very dehumanizing language and body horror aspects, and an ending i never even expected. The ending really had me thinking and going back to re read things in case i missed something because i couldnt believe it. Finished within a couple hours too so not too long.

Oddly captivating. The storyline is greatly different from any other end of the world like book, everything was gripping me closer until the very ending of the book the ending felt a bit rushed or lacking a shocking ending.

Well…. this book sure was, something.

Shocked. The book had me feeling bad for the main character but at the end the twist was shocking , it literally left me with my mouth wide open . I did not expect that at all . I recommend for sure .

I Never Knew What To Expect Next. There are so many twists that surprised me. I honestly loved the book. I read TITF with my book club and our goal was the finish part one and I just couldn’t stop reading to the point I finished the book. The author does an amazing job at providing visuals of not only the humans but such detailed mental images of the places. I loved the book but it is not for the weak of heart or stomach as some scenes that are described can be disturbing, but if that interest you then this is the book for you.

horrifying and gorgeous. beautiful, hyper-realistic horror

Such a dystopian life. This book will continue to shock you. It will also show you how easy it is to change terminology of some things to make them seem less horrific. Fantastic book, through and through.

This book will grip you by the throat. Could not put this thing down. Delightfully horrifying, this book takes a macabre look at the future of our meat eating society. Eloquently written and truly ghastly.

loved it. dystopian vibes, I lived for every page. everything about it was disgusting in the best way and as a horror fan I can’t recommend this enough

Soo good. Disturbingly amazing!!

Better than American Psycho.. I read this book a couple months ago in 3 days. I don’t believe I have ever given reviews on books besides stars on here or ever. Since reading the book I have gone to watch 2 different psychological thriller/horror movies and within the first 5 minutes of both I want to pause the movie and switch to “watch” this book, Then to remember I read this amazing piece of art. I DONT WANT a movie…I just…y’all this book. It gives you the best PTSD.

It was okay... Had some interesting parts. At times I was ready for it to be over. The ending was interesting. The wow factor to the book was the best to me but I wish there was more of a plot or actual story line to it.

Just ok. The setting is bleak (and so is the ending) but other than that this is pretty standard heavy handed social commentary fare. Points for grossing me out though.

Wow really intense. Really intense book but a great one.

Amazing book!. As a vegan, I thought it wasn’t as messed up as I was lead to believe. Instead, it was really just an analogy for animal exploitation and suffering but swapped out with humans. I feel like this is a great book to help people find perspective on how messed up animal agriculture can be. With that said, there’s still plenty of shocking and hard to get through parts of the book that are just heart wrenching. Anyway, amazing read, 100% recommend it.

Eh. I had high hopes. Ended up being a lot of plot that wasn’t interesting and not enough of the interesting stuff. Would still read tho

Captivatingly Creepy. Death is no stranger in my world, both animal and human, but the way the author molds the story, characters, and scenarios is chilling to the core. Different, very well written. Not for the faint of heart

Wow. Beautifully written. Captivating. Not for those with a weak stomach.

Speechless. I LITERALLY read the entire thing in one sitting. Such a mind boggling read… still trying to wrap my head around that ending. I wish I could read it all over again. I just wish that it was a longer book..

waste of time. I was so excited to read this book due to its concept, however the whole book came up short. Tons of pages of lengthy monologues and backgrounds yet they barely touched on the gore- this book had so much potential but it made no sense.

No words. Oh my gosh!!

Enough. It was good for what it gave. There was lots of heavy imagery, plenty of fcked-upness with gore f you’re coming off American Psycho. The ending could be called weak, but I think it satisfied the character. Disappointed in him, but not surprised.

Hoping for more. I read this as it was recommended in a reading group. They talked about how great it was. It was quite graphic, but the story could’ve been so much more. I wasn’t a huge fan.

Tender is the Flesh. Such a good read!!!!

Disturbing and thought provoking.. If you’re looking for a book that will make your stomach turn, read this. Well-written and a great plot. I’d recommend that everyone gives it a chance.

1000000/10. This book BROKE me 😭 the ending is not expected in the slightest!

Not Worth the Read for the Rnding. I really like the concept, I think overall the author executed things nicely; she does a really good job getting you to empathize with the main character even while reading about the awful things that he has to do. The author also has a beautiful and visual way of writing that I absolutely loved. With that said, the ending was totally out of left field, and while I enjoy twist endings, there was virtually nothing that would make the ending make sense for the main character. It made me feel unbelievably angry, which may have been the author’s goal, but that anger was not only from the main characters actions, but also from how much his actions didn’t make sense. The ending completely undid ANY growth the main character did. It was a huge plot twist that was underwhelming and, in my opinion, makes the book not worth reading. I wouldn’t reread this book, and I don’t think I’d recommend it either. I absolutely love books with morally gray, and oftentimes “bad,” main characters… but this.. I would rather no ending.

DO NOT READ. The author includes a weird sadistic description to the torture and killing of puppies. Humans are one thing but what is her problem?! Puppies?! It’s a chapter that doesn’t even add to the plot of the story! It was easily the worst thing I’ve ever read and now I can’t get it out of my head. I won’t finish the story I can’t that was disgusting and now I’m questioning the goodness of the author. She needs help.

wonderful imagery, weak plot. this novel felt more like the day to day goings of the main character rather than the riveting plot that i was expecting. the ending was a bit of a surprise, but felt very forced and like i skipped from the beginning of the middle to the end. a good read nonetheless, with very gruesome imagery and a sickening vision of the future of our meat market, but could have been “meatier”

A bit of a let down. Truthfully I was recommended this book and saw it had allot of hype on the internet. I typically enjoy thrillers or even scary/horror writing. The concept is interesting and holds your attention I just think it could have been executed better. It’s a little boring at times even though the topic is intriguing, just not my favorite read truthfully. Over hyped

Tender is the Flesh. An absolute page turner! Be prepared for some intense and bizarre dreams if you read this before bedtime. Only reason I’m giving this book 4/5 stars is that the ending felt a bit rushed and left me yearning for more. Morbidly twisted read if you can stomach the content.

great!!. very good book, ending is so heartbreaking tho ☹️. the lack of care that they have for the “head” is just awful man.

I like it but not the ending. It’s good and it makes you not want to eat meat ever again but I ending kinda hit fasted and ended…

So good!. This book might not be for everyone but I couldn’t put it down!!!

Not as wild as I expected.. This book was hyped up online and I was intrigued by the premise. There are some shocking chapters, but overall the build up throughout part 1 is better than the payoff in part 2. The writing style is cold and clinical (possibly partially due to the translation), which plays well with the subject matter, but isn’t conducive to character development. I finished the book feeling like I didn’t know the main character any better than when I started the book - perhaps this was intentional. That being said, I did finish it in less than a week… it is definitely compelling.
