The Spare Bedroom by Elizabeth Neep Book Summary

**Listed Today**: Fun and friendly professional just arrived from London seeks room in central location, double bed preferred, ex-boyfriend optional extra.

Armed with a super-sized backpack full of optimism, Jess sets off in search of sun, sea and a much-needed new beginning.

Things don’t get off to a good start.

Instead of sunshine, she’s met with torrential rain. Her job prospects are as dismal as the weather and that friend-of-a-friend she was meant to stay with has fallen through. Just as Jess is homeless, jobless and wishing she’d gone for the waterproof mascara, she runs into the last person she expected to see. Sam. The ex she never got over. Jess always believed that one day fate would bring them back together. Now he’s here, more gorgeous than ever.

Before she knows it, Jess is accepting Sam’s offer to stay in his spare room. But while she may have been less than truthful about the mess she’s in, there is also one rather important thing Sam has neglected to mention.

Suddenly Jess isn’t just living with her ex, but with his new girlfriend too. All of that baggage she thought she left behind may have caught up with her…

A touching, funny and uplifting look at how finding and losing love can lead you to discover yourself along the way. Fans of Mhairi McFarlane, Sophie Kinsella and classic rom coms like My Best Friend’s Wedding will love Elizabeth Neep’s wit and warmth.

The Spare Bedroom. First time reading this author. This is a story about relationships. Friends and lovers. I felt so sorry for Jess through most of the book. Many readers might see their own lives reflected in her story and hopefully come to the same conclusion she ultimately was forced to. It’s a clean but very well told story. I would definitely read this author again.

I love it!. This book is funny and full of surprises. Everyone deserves a new beginning, and a fresh starts after some falls. <3

Not Too Shabby. I’m giving this book 4 stars because for a few reasons. 1. I feel like it has a slow start that never really picks up until the end. 2. The ending is not what I expected, which isn’t necessarily bad, except it was like a surprise twist to hurry up and finish the story?? The writing was good, the author being verbose and good at including details. The storyline was good and the timeline switch to give the reader a glimpse of the past was an interesting touch to the novel. Overall, worth the read!

Good read. Good read, wasn’t exactly the romantic comedy I expected but was worthwhile. Sadly the book didn’t create much excitement for me personally and I found myself finishing the book because I had started it, opposed to because I couldn’t wait to see how it ended.

Spelling mistakes/ typos. Found at least 3 or 4 typos, ‘staring’ instead of ‘starting’ for example. Ruined it a little.

It had potential. I really wanted to like this book because the plot seemed like it had potential, however, after sixty pages I gave up. Initially I enjoyed the first person narrative and the inner musings of the main character but then it became annoying because there was too much and consequently it made the story drag from such an early point. Maybe it was because of the heaps of inner monologue but the main character’s reaction to things came across as overly dramatic and adolescent. Similarly her interactions with other characters seemed contrived in a way where i think more research is needed on the author’s part when it comes to developing characters.

Huge page turner!. LOVED this book! From the first page I was hooked and couldn’t put it down! I laughed and cried and even related to Jess in many ways. You know it’s been a good book when you feel sad that you finished it!

Unlikeable. The main character is too unlikeable and self centered to enjoy the story.

A great book!. I read this book in one sitting - everytime I thought I’d stop at the end of a chapter I found myself carrying on to the next! Really enjoyed!

Loved it!!. Absolutely loved this book, couldn’t put it down!! I really hope there is a follow up. Thank you

Character not Relatable. The very first chapter mentions grabbing wine from a shelf in an aisle in Woolworths, Australia. Woolworths doesn’t sell alcohol in Australia. The main character is also complaining because it is raining heavy in August and she won’t be able to get a tan. August is winter in Australia and surely the character would know this. Also, Sydney has more rain in total mms/per year than London ever does. I guess the character didn’t review the weather before moving to another country. Although it is fiction, I didn’t find this character or book relatable.

Spare Bedroom. Funny yet shows bow easy it is to fall before you find hour strength. Great read.
