Roman je duboko uzbudljiv niz priča, očevica narodne i državne tragedije, pisca koji je tragediju sa svojim narodom i svojom državom, i žrtvama u krvi, do kraja podelio. U godini kada se činilo da Srbija nestaje sa istorijske i geografske mape, Branislavu Nušiću poginuo je sin Strahinja-Ban, kao vojnik vojske Kraljevine Srbije. Pisac ovaj roman posvećuje prerano nastradalom detetu.
Ispisujući kolektivnu i ličnu tragediju, Nušić roman započinje u jesen 1915. i završava događajima u zimu iste godine, neposredno pre nego što su narod i država, iznureni ratovanjem i stradanjima, krenuli u povlačenje preko albanskih i crnogorskih planinskih vrleti. Pišući „Pogovor“ romanu, u martu 1920, pisac kaže: „Mada je ova knjiga dosta opsežna, ja nisam ni pomišljao njome obuhvatiti celokupnu tragediju devetsopetnaeste godine. Beležio sam, opažao i saosećao sam u pojavama koje su se zbivale oko mene ili doprle do mene, jer, učesnik i sâm u velikoj nevolji, nisam ni mogao dalje dogledati. Moja knjiga završava u Peći, jer se tu završava i tragedija naroda. Odatle dalje nastaju tragedije pojedinaca, od kojih svaka za se zaslužuje po jednu ovoliku knjigu.“
