La Bestia – A Szörnyeteg. Így nevezik Mexikóban azokat a tehervonatokat, amelyek tetején az elviselhetetlen szegénység, vagy a drogkartellek, vagy épp saját bűnös múltjuk elől menekülve tömegek utaznak Közép- és Dél-Amerika országaiból az Egyesült Államok, „Amerika földje” felé. A „piszkos Amerikából” egy jobb helyre, amelynek persze szintén megvan a maga mocska – például épp a bevándorlók ellen felszított gyűlölet formájában. Több ezer kilométeres útjuk során a menekülő embereket szinte kivétel nélkül kifosztják, váltságdíjat remélve foglyul ejtik, a nőket megerőszakolják – a Mexikót behálózó nagy hatalmú kartellek mindenütt ott vannak, és nekik az emberélet olcsó.
Lydia soha nem gondolta, hogy belőle is „migráns” lesz: Acapulco városából való, jómódú, középosztálybeli mexikói nő, akik nyolcéves kisfiával, Lucával együtt mégis a La Bestián, majd a hírhedt Sonora-sivatagban, egy embercsempész vezette csapatban próbálja elérni az ígéret földjét, a határfalon túli Egyesült Államokat. Ha nem sikerül, mert valaki felismeri vagy elárulja őket, és üldözőjük rájuk talál, a biztos halál vár rájuk. Csak a Gondviselésben, avagy a földönfutókat segítő, jólelkű emberekben bízhatnak.
