Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • GMA BOOK CLUB PICK • Meet Elizabeth Zott: “a gifted research chemist, absurdly self-assured and immune to social convention” (The Washington Post) in 1960s California whose career takes a detour when she becomes the unlikely star of a beloved TV cooking show. • STREAM ON APPLE TV+

This novel is “irresistible, satisfying and full of fuel” (The New York Times Book Review) and “witty, sometimes hilarious...the Catch-22 of early feminism” (Stephen King, via Twitter).

A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New York Times, Washington Post, NPR, Oprah Daily, Entertainment Weekly, Newsweek

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

But like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show Supper at Six. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo.

Laugh-out-loud funny, shrewdly observant, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters, Lessons in Chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist.

Read this book if you are watching Lessons in Chemistry. The first episode of Lessons in Chemistry on Apple streaming intrigued me so much that I had to read the book it is based on. Original story line. Thought provoking subjects. Wonderful characters. For me, best book I have read all year.

Great book. Loved it😍

Lessons in Chemistry. This is a delightful, charming study of a not exactly traditional relationship, a mystery solved, and a feminist diatribe against all things women have had to endure due to sexism. It made me laugh out loud and absolutely furious at what women have had to go through since the beginning of time. It is absolutely original and a beautiful story about the families we make when the ones we are born into don’t work out.

Close to home. Became a veterinarian when women we just starting to take over. I never had one word of encouragement in undergrad. Now women are flourishing in science and medicine. These opportunities are paved with many other women who put up with so much crap.

A novel and a fable. Strikes the perfect balance of reading a charming story and learning the lesson.

Lessons in Chemistry. Shredded my heart at all the injustices our hero and heroine endured. As a warrior, she is fearless and unmatched, but at such cost. Its an amazing read. Couldn’t put it down.

Entertaining. Great read that kept me engaged the entire time. Elizabeth’s character was strong and delightful. Loved the surprise ending

Nice. 😍 Check out the game: little Alchemy

Perfect read just right. A mixture of fun and the reality of women’s roles and how they were viewed in the 1950s. Recommending to my 15 year old granddaughter.

Great story line. Loved this book. Especially how she wove the dog’s personality into the story

Love this cover. One of my top reads for 2022! I feel very emotional about the story and messages in this book. Read it- and listen to the author interviews too!

Saw the Show First. I saw the show first and then read this. It’s a little bit different than the show, and was also a great read.

Very good. It seemed like a really long time before the climax of this story. Really unique how the chemistry worked into every day life. Overall I liked it and hope there will be a sequel as I really was left wondering what happens next.

Highly recommend. Fabulous read. Finished in two days. Wanted more.

Lessons in Chemistry. Couldn’t put it down ! Lovely, Sad and Funny With life lessons woven within the stories..

Overrated. Highly overrated but it was an okay book. Took me a while to read it, I am used to thrillers or books that make me want to get to the ending. I wanted to get to the ending because I thought there was something more.

So good!. Read the book alongside with the tv series! Could not recommend it more. The characters are so well crafted and the themes in the story asks a lot of questions that are still very relevant to our society today. Elizabeth Zott is now one of my biggest inspirations in the literary world!

An easy read.. Heartfelt and sweet with a dash of whimsy.

Loved this! More characters like Elizabeth Zott please!. Romance, career angst, a sparkling and funny and brilliant heroine. Plus the family story and beautiful empowerment messages throughout. A must read for every woman who studies, works hard, and wants to find true love that conquers all/.

Stop and read now. Wonderful

Worth the hype. A tribute to women’s resilience

Lessons in Chemistry. Captivating ,funny and all together an entertaining read. Loved it!

Nice Title. The focus on the struggle of women in the workplace during this time was excellent. However it dragged a bit at times and the super smart dog was just too much.

Love it. Ez to read Hard to put down

Lessons in Chemistry. Worthy of 5 stars. Read it. You won’t be disappointed.

Great. Excellent book

Lessons in Chemistry. The story line was so original. I too was adopted. The ending was amazing. I never suspected the ending.

An astonishingly brilliant & unforgettable debut novel!. This book is destined to be a timeless literary classic, a work of sharp insights, genius, wit, and humanity in a league with Catch-22, The Cider House Rules, David Copperfield, and The Time Traveler’s Wife. Its impact leaves me nearly speechless in the face of the acclaim it deserves!

Great Read. Interesting, funny and smart

Awe inspiring and Moving. What a great book. I’m so glad I read it. Different than the Apple series in a more 1950s historical accuracy approach. But the struggle is still real. Thanks for a chance to remember to still go out and make a difference.

Complexity. Read this three times in order to appreciate all of it.

LOVE IT. I love the story, the science and the characters :)

Fantastic!. What a creative, fun book this was! Loved the characters, especially the dog.

Perfect. This book had me engaged from start to middle to finish. Intense, revealing, and above all entertaining. 10/10 would recommend, and read again.

Did not care for. Unlike many who raved about this book, I didn’t care for it and turned it back into the library about halfway through. I found the anti-male bias heavy-handed and unbalanced. I’m a retired married baby boomer with a 40-year career in business, so I have some relevant experience during the time she writes about. I worked with some wonderful men who were mentors. There were, of course, a few bad apples, but the author makes it sound like all men treated women abominably in the workplace. Not my experience. I just couldn’t handle her negativity towards men. Not a fan.

Disappointed. As much as BG researched her scientific data and processes, I would have thought she’d had done more research on her theology. The heavy handed, anti-Catholic and anti-male bias and stereotyping of the era made this hard to read. She must have had some very bad experiences in her life to go so far out of her way to show her hatred of men and the Catholic Church. Regretful my book club selected this one. It’s a pity too because her writing style and the pace of the book are engaging.

Who knew chemistry was so interesting?. I couldn’t stop reading this book! I got hooked on the story via the tv show. Loved it.

Couldn’t put it down. A lot of twists and turns, but easy and enjoyable to follow.

Best book I have read this year!. It has everything. It’s entertaining, informative, humorous, horrifying, thrilling, encouraging, I could go on and on. A must read!

Lessons in Chemistry. Elizabeth Zoltan is the quirkiest of characters because she is so intelligent but wouldn’t begin to know how to be any other way than a straight shooter in life. I loved every minute of this book and wished it wouldn’t end. I read it in record time and can’t wait to see the movie.

BOTM Review. Very intriguing book with elements of women struggles and strengths. Although the overall story had sad tones, the ending made everything the characters went through worthwhile!

Lessons In Chemistry definitely taught me something. Slightly predictable, but some moments in this novel hit like a train.

Excellent, heart-warming. This is a quick read, well written, and highly entertaining. A wonderful story that many will find insightful and relevant even in today’s society. I’m glad I chose to read this!

So good!!!!. This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time! I slowed down reading it because I didn’t want to finish. Definitely recommend!

Lessons. Excellent book! I was hooked in chapter one.

A Modern Masterpiece. Surprisingly unputdownable.

Loved this from start to finish. Such a wonderful story love strong women and the love of a dog how can you go wrong

Outstanding!. I could not put this book down. It’s a very entertaining read and I would most definitely recommend this book. The author nailed the character development. Elizabeth Zott is an inspirational character who knows exactly who she is and what she wants in life. I admire her strength to keep going even through all the heartache she had endured.

Read it!. I enjoyed this book! Overcoming life’s trials and tribulations.

Great book. I love this book because of its strong female characters. It’s a love story. It’s inspiring. It’s funny and heart breaking. I love Elizabeth’s Zott’s uncompromising attitude and her unwillingness to surrender to adversity.
