The Silent Wife by A. S. A. Harrison Book Summary

The New York Times bestselling novel soon to be a major motion picture starring Nicole Kidman, for fans of The Woman in the Window and The Silent Patient.

"I gobbled it down in one sitting." – Anne Lamott, People

Jodi and Todd are at a bad place in their marriage. Much is at stake, including the affluent life they lead in their beautiful waterfront condo in Chicago, as she, the killer, and he, the victim, rush haplessly toward the main event. He is a committed cheater. She lives and breathes denial. He exists in dual worlds. She likes to settle scores. He decides to play for keeps. She has nothing left to lose. Told in alternating voices, The Silent Wife is about a marriage in the throes of dissolution, a couple headed for catastrophe, concessions that can’t be made, and promises that won’t be kept. Expertly plotted and reminiscent of Gone Girl and These Things Hidden, The Silent Wife ensnares the reader from page one and does not let go.

Underwhelming ending. I enjoyed the anticipation of where it could go but the author often got hung up on describing every unnecessary detail and the ending was a let down. No plot twist here just a long drawn out story.

The Silent Wife. I struggled to finish this book. It really got boring. The murder plot was weak and unimaginative.

Good read. Overall, a pretty good read! At times got a little tedious but I enjoyed it none the less .

Meh. I had a super hard time getting through this book. It was a drag and not a really satisfactory ending considering how slow/dull it was throughout. I don’t understand where all the praise is coming from.

Yawnnnnn. Worst book I've read in a longggg time

Wake me when it’s over, please. Tedious reading. Probably because it’s in the present tense. I don’t care for this writing stay. The only thing worse is first person present. I draw the line there..,just won’t read those type of books. I made the the mistake of having an inkling of the end. I made the assumption that there was a modicum at least of suspense. I’m still waiting. I decided to not finish it and write this review, which isn’t likely to help anyone decide to buy this book and then read it. So I just stick with my first impression which was it seeming intriguing and follow that with my conclusion that I was wrong.

A lovely read made dim by its lackluster ending.. Read it in a day and loved the psychology, but only wish there was more about Jodi, her sufferings, her family and her future.

Long and boring. This book felt soooo long and boring, I had to really push myself to even continue reading until the end. There were some good entertaining parts but overall very blah. I have read many other similar style books that I would recommend instead

Intense and entertaining. I couldn't stop reading this story, and the characters were so well-described that I could envision the apartment, the scenes, the smells...but not the ending. Well done!

Didn’t get it. The ending was horrible.

Not great….. Rather drawn out and slow. And really not a mystery or a thriller. This isn’t an author I would pick up again.

Glad I read it. It wasn’t necessarily a page turner, but I would say that I was entertained throughout. Ending was a little anticlimactic

Loved it. I totally fell for the main character, felt such a deep sadness for her and oddly a connection to her as well. It was one of those books I couldn't wait to pick back up after I had put it down because I was missing the characters!

Quality writing, boring plot. The author is clearly a great writer but the plot was so straightforward. I was expecting it to be like "The Girl on the Train" or "Gone Girl" like the reviews had said but there was hardly any anticipation in this storyline.

I Wish I Were A Silent Wife. There are some problems with this book, such as there no longer seems to be these kinds of women in existence anymore. “Her” is really the epitome of the Stepford Wife, the ‘50’s Wife, the Pre-feminist-era-pill-numbing-psychoanalized Wife. She has just been updated to the twenty-first century in drugs (alcohol), clothes, education, status, and job (part-time, because women of a certain status CAN but don’t NEED to DO IT ALL.) Another problem is “Her” attraction to a self-made man and her total compliance to his faults of character, which eventually lead to her breakthrough/breakdown. Although it was explained away, her family, and especially her father, represented the complete opposite during her childhood. I could go on, but I have to say, I did enjoy the book and the writing, mainly because I suspended my disbelief (much the same as Her) and just went with the flow. And much like Her, I didn’t feel as though my time were wasted, therefore I’m looking forward to future works from this talented author.

Don’t waste your money- it’s awful!. This was one of the most excruciating books I’ve ever red. I’m sad I wasted my money on this one!

So boring!!!!. Literally had to skip ahead some parts to get past all of the babbling and excessive backstories that really had nothing to do with the current story. Awful!!!

Awful. Don’t buy this book, it’s a waste of money. One of the worst books I’ve ever read. Seriously...go to amazon and read more reviews before you pay for this.

Slow very slow. Too much extraneous dialog. I skipped through a lot of it and didn't miss a thing. Disappointed by the ending

Fast easy read. It was a page turner. The ending seemed improbable

The Silent Wife. This was my first book by this author. I don't like the writing style. The storyline was good, but I felt like the story dragged on especially in the beginning. It took a while for the book to get good. A lot of unnecessary psycho babble.

Disappointing finish. Started out great. Was very deep. Then kind of fizzled out. Was bored by the end.

Nothing like Gone Girl. This book lacks the building of suspense and character development that Gone Girl has, so I was surprised that some of the newspaper review said this was the next Gone Girl. Throughout the book, you are made aware of all of the "twists" prior to when they happen, and even the ones that the author does not outright say ahead of time, are entirely predictable. I would not recommend this book to a friend.

A wild ride. Todd was endearing and at times infuriating. Jodi is a whole paradigm. This book was so hard to put down, taking my reading time from 30 minutes a day to 2 hours.

Loved the way the author wrote the book.. Kept me intrigued till the last sentence. Looking forward to the movie!

Just OK. I was expecting the likes of Gone Girl and this just didn't deliver. Deep character building and great description writing but just not all that exciting...

Silent wife. Terrible book ,I skipped about half of it,I think the writer needs to learn about writing.....skip this book it definitely is not girl on the train type of book

Lack luster entertainment. The main premise of this book sounded so intriguing: betrayal and murder. It fell very short of the potential it had to be a great novel. I skimmed through much of the psycho babble hoping to get to "the juicy part" which there was none. I wished there were plot twists or surprises of some kind but it just didn't go anywhere. The characters were thin layered and overall boring. I didn't like them or hate them as they weren't interesting enough to care either way.

Nah. Am I missing something here? This book had great reviews, yet was a huge let down for me.

Don’t waste your timr. Boring and pointless. Not even worth the 1.99$ I paid for it.

Started great, ended wack. The story was short. It was interesting at first, then it gets a little boring and ends with nothing. You don’t get to know much about the characters nor the secrets. A lot of unanswered questions.

The silent Wife. Great read!! Couldn't put it down!!

Better than expected. The reviews for this book were really rather mixed, but I, glad I gave it a shot. No pun intended lol. It is slow and builds up pretty well, but I felt like the end was rushed a bit. I really felt for Jodi throughout, whereas with Gone Girl (which after reading this was the next recommendation) I felt for neither protagonist. All in all a good read, good storyline.

Terrible.. I kept reading this book in hopes it would get better ..... it didn’t. To compare this to “Gone Girl” is just wrong. It fell horribly flat. No work up in suspense whatsoever. Too much detail, not enough dialogue.

No. No way.

The Silent Wife. Pretty good story. Interesting characters. A little too much psychology lessons at the expense of plot. Still enjoyed it.

Enjoyable. I really enjoyed this book. I like when authors switch between different points of view, which gives me a more complete story, and this author does it well. The story is interesting and the characters are as well. I recommend this booK! :)

How did I make it till the end.. Somehow I read the whole book. I finished it in a day, mainly because I wanted to get it over. It just really seemed pointless! Comparing it to Gone Girl, was an embarrassment to Gone girl. I tend to share my read books with friends, but this one is going in the free donation box!

Blah. So this was a quick read & had all the possibilities of being a great read but the author missed the boat. Lots of questions left unanswered.....where is Allison, Dean etc???? Just kinda felt this was almost reading someone's diary.

Lovely Read. I loved the story line and it was made even better with the choice of words and how well each sentence flowed together. I got lost in it every time. Page turner. Makes you think!!

Boring. I think the author definitely needs to learn more about entertainment and it was just all blah blah blah.

The Silent Wife. A real page turner. Well written, dimensional characters, great plot, with a surprising ending. It was very entertaining and worth reading.

Where is the ending?. What the hell? Never wraps up the cliffhangers!

Good book. Enjoyed the suspense. Comparable to Gone Girl and other recent murder mystery/ thrillers.

The Silent Wife. Riveting...with twists & turns to the very end! Can't wait for Harrison's next novel!!

Be patient. Good story overall. Quite thoughtful and meaningful story about expectations.

The silent wife. I would not recommend. I struggled to finish this book, drags, not much happens until the last 20/30 pages.

The Silent Wife. Short, felt unfinished and ended abruptly. Excellent character development by author. Left me wanting more.

Clunky, disappointing. I think it started well but got clunky as it went on. None of the characters were likeable, which made it frustrating bc I couldn't root for anyone. I decided to read it bc I'd read it was "soon to be a major motion picture starring Nicole Kidman." I'm the kind of person who likes to read the book first. I'm not really a fan of Nicole Kidman but can imagine she will be great in the role--ice princess all the way. I did like the author's insight into why people do the things they do--it made me wonder if she/he is actually a therapist with all the psychobabble. I felt disappointed with the way the story turned. I guess I was hoping for a happy ending--a love story, not a murder mystery.

Great. Awesome. Beautifully written.
