At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor . . . well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.
When tragedy strikes in her first week on the job The Stranger Times is forced to do some serious investigating. What they discover leads to a shocking realisation: some of the stories they'd previously dismissed as nonsense are in fact terrifyingly real. Soon they come face-to-face with darker forces than they could ever have imagined.
The Stranger Times is the first novel from C.K. McDonnell, the pen name of Caimh McDonnell. It combines his distinctive dark wit with his love of the weird and wonderful to deliver a joyous celebration of how truth really can be stranger than fiction.

Cliched and out of date. Cliched humour is in abundance here, too much in fact, with clunky dialogue and less edge than a rubber ball. It’s a very beige type of humour, barely raising a smile and lacking innovation or genuine wit. Everything is telegraphed several pages before it lumbers onto the page. Not for Gaiman fans, quite the opposite - this is a Sunday early evening ITV sitcom of a book.
Fun urban fantasy. I’m a big fan of the Laundry and Rivers of London series and this was appealing in very similar ways: the gradual revelation of magic and the supernatural, a rogue’s gallery of colourful protagonists and a clear over-arching plot line woven into the more immediate action. Without spoiling the surprise I thought some of the backstory felt less strong than other similar series but it’s early days and might make more sense to me as the series (of course it’s a series) continues. Very enjoyable read - hard to put down!

Superb urban fantasy, humour and pathos.. Honestly this was reminiscent of Pratchett with laugh out loud moments mixed in with observations of the human condition. A plot that moved along and a world well built. A very decent and enjoyable read.
Hilariously unputdownable!. I gobbled this book up in 2 days! Loved the funny fantasy but still dark story line and the characters are genius! I will be hanging out for the next instalment.
Stranger times. Impressively witty and intriguing read. Fell in love with the characters straight away. Lots of secrets still waiting to be discovered and can’t wait for the next book!!
