Waylon Russell Brewer is a fat, openly gay boy stuck in the small West Texas town of Clover City. Waylon and Hannah decide there’s only one thing to do: run—and leave high school with a bang. A very glittery bang. Along the way, Waylon discovers that there is a lot more to running for prom court than campaign posters and plastic crowns, especially when he has to spend so much time with the very cute and infuriating prom king nominee Tucker Watson.

Odd trail to get here. First saw Danielle McDonald in Falling For Figaro, found she was in a movie called Dumplin’, from a book also by Julie Murphy, which led me to wishlist it, as well as her other books, at Bookbub. I’m looking forward to reading Julie’s other books. This was a lot of fun—misconceptions were exploding everywhere, along with some expectations. Sometimes, you have misconceptions about yourself, as a teen or later, and the world changes once you notice them. The drag scene and miracle workers show up here, as they did in Dumplin’, and I hope some of the other novels have them as well.
Great for all ages. Funny, beautiful, encouraging novel about the longing to fit in and the journey to allow oneself to stand out.
