The Wish by Nicholas Sparks Book Summary

With exclusive travel photos and a special letter from the Author, only available for e-readers.

From the author of The Longest Ride and The Return comes a novel about the enduring legacy of first love, and the decisions that haunt us forever.
1996 was the year that changed everything for Maggie Dawes. Sent away at sixteen to live with an aunt she barely knew in Ocracoke, a remote village on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, she could think only of the friends and family she left behind . . . until she met Bryce Trickett, one of the few teenagers on the island. Handsome, genuine, and newly admitted to West Point, Bryce showed her how much there was to love about the wind-swept beach town—and introduced her to photography, a passion that would define the rest of her life.

By 2019, Maggie is a renowned travel photographer. She splits her time between running a successful gallery in New York and photographing remote locations around the world. But this year she is unexpectedly grounded over Christmas, struggling to come to terms with a sobering medical diagnosis. Increasingly dependent on a young assistant, she finds herself becoming close to him.

As they count down the last days of the season together, she begins to tell him the story of another Christmas, decades earlier—and the love that set her on a course she never could have imagined.

Touched my heart. Very well written. “Love is stronger than fear” and this book will touch your heart in ways unimaginable. It will take you on a love journey that has turns and twists but in the end love wins and lessons are learned.

Must read. Love it!!!

Prepare to cry. I haven’t cried as much as I did with a book before! I loved from the beginning to the end!

Love N. Sparks’ stories but not this one.. To be honest, I had no idea what this book was about. I only bought it because of the author. I am not interested in reading about any teenage love story. As an adult, it is a little creepy for me and I married my high school sweetheart! Sorry NS, hope the next one is for adults.

*****. Excellent book. Couldn’t put it down. Tear jerker at end of story. Love Nicholas Sparks.

Wrecked Beyond Belief. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A great read and a long cry. I love all of Nicholas Sparks books but this one personally hit home. Through the book I thought I knew what was coming and that it was predictable, but the ending left me sobbing. Themes of young love, adoption, finding oneself, death and grief… whew.

Another Amazing Story!!. Although I figure out the significance of a certain character way earlier in the story than I should have, and it made me angry at myself, I am very glad I finished the story anyways! It was extremely well written, as always, to the point that I could picture each moment as described. Thank you Nicholas for all of your incredible stories and the time and effort that you dedicate to every detail. It is what will always make you my favorite.

Amazing. Out of all of Nickolas Sparks’ books, this was my all time favorite. The past/ present views make you so in tune with the narrator of the story. I could not put this book down and ended up finishing it in a day. Sparks does it again!

The Wish. Absolutely loved it!!!

The Wish. It is a beautiful love story. I was enthralled during the entire story!!!

the wish. Nicholas Sparks does it again!! phenomenal!!

Great read. Enchanting. Couldn’t put it down.

So so good!!. i cried so much but i loved the story and it made me really think about life’s unpredictability. One of my favorite books. Wish i could read for the first time again!!

Magical. As every time, Sparks nailed this book. Even though the subject is not an easy one to speak about, Nicholas offers here a beautiful story and maybe a movie to come ♥️

Not good. Trite and mediocre. However, this is the only Nicholas Sparks book I’ve ever read where no one had purple or turquoise eyes and there were no mentions of blouses, slacks or pumps.

Rollarcollar. Brilliant! The book brought me through a rollercoaster of emotions. Nicholas Sparks has done it again, bestseller and if Hollywood is smart another movie!

The Wish. Love this book! Like all Nicholas Sparks books this one will not disappoint!

Wow, just wow.. Wow, just wow. Not the genre I usually read, I laughed, I cried, and felt deeply connected to the characters. Wow, just wow.

Another great read!. As always, Nicholas Sparks never disappoints! The Wish was just as amazing as every other novel he has written. Can’t wait for the next one!

The wish. The characters seemed so real I felt I could reach out and touch them. As sad as the ending was it also gave me hope that somethings in life can come out right. I loved Maggie’s sense of adventure and her ability to stick her chin up no matter how many punches life landed on her. Thank you for giving me a wonderful read.

The Wish. Loved this latest book of Nicholas Sparks so much. It felt like reading 2 books in 1 since it contained 2 different stories. Over 20 years apart. I’ve read all of NS books & each one keeps getting better & better.

Should have 10 Stars, Not Five!. Do not where to begin to tell you how much I loved “The Wish!” Such real characters, I felt Maggie and Bryce were neighbors I had prayed over. An ending I never expected. Must admit that I could not sleep one night, worrying about the outcome of this book. Got up and read the last chapter so I could finally go to sleep. That is how real Nicholas Sparks made these characters. Must read!

Great story.. Awesome story about true love.

The Wish. One of his best!

The Wish. This book had me intrigued from the beginning all the way to the ending. Definitely was not what I expected in the end, but it was so worth the read. It had sadness, it had happiness. Every single emotion I felt as though it were happening to me. This is by far the best book Nicholas Sparks has written. I have recommended this book to a few coworkers who have began reading it also. I didn’t want to put this book down. Much of this book, I related to, which made it that much better!! ❤️

Incredible Story!. I think I loved this book more than any of the other Nicholas Sparks books. I just loved it!

The Wish. Uplifting and magical.

I don’t even know. This was an amazing read. It made me cry twice. I can say, it WAS hard for me to read it in the beginning just because it really depressed me, but the more I read, the more I gained interest into Maggie’s life. I loved this read. 🥹

Perfect! I cried so much. I couldn’t put it down. It was so sweet

The Wish. Awesome book, couldn’t stop reading it, loved it, everything Nicholas Sparks writes is awesome!!!

The Wish. Another great one. It reads like a movie and feels like real life. A great read!

Sad face. Big big sad

Sweet sweet story. This lovely story kept my attention throughout. I loved it!

Rediscoverinmg a sentimental favorite author. Years ago I read notebook and one or two of his other books and then for some reason lost track of his work. Then I saw this title on the best seller lists and couldn’t resist. Somehow I’d combined notebook and bridges of Madison sounty in my mind. I gues that can happen as you get old. Ocracoke is a place that has always fascinated me. Blackbeard the pirate spent some time there as I recall. The islands of the outer banks have always appealed to me. They used to be a great place for boardsailing - probably still are. And of sourse Kitty Hawk isn’t far away. The story of Maggie and Bryce is a great love story and the way it is told in pieces makes it more poignant. The end wasn’t surprising. Some of the other twists were easy to guess but the story was still heart warming. It seemed particularly appropriate to read it at Christmas time. I also enjoyed the exploration of photography. Since retiring from my real job - my calling - I have enjoyed developing my skills as a photographer. She talks about phots ultimately being an individual expression of how a photographer experiences the world and I found that well stated.

Incredible. Although this story was about a teenage love, I related it to my youth and how I felt. Fast forward to the present and the reality of the situation was all too real. Having had family survive it, it hit home. The end was poetic and I felt gratified at how Maggie got closure. Great read!

The Wish ~ Contemplative. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read this at first, too sadly realistic. He has such a beautiful way of bringing the reader into the story and capturing all the emotions. The ending, while I was crying, is so inspirational that it made me think about all the great things I have and to really appreciate them, every day!

Can’t stop crying.. I always love his books. This was was especially good.

I didn’t want it to end. Wow, I can’t put into words how remarkable this story was. I never wanted to stop reading it. The heaviness of love and loss in this story has made it my favorite book from Sparks yet. I felt every emotion through the words on the pages and even though it wasn’t the ending I had imagined it would be, it left me satisfied. A must read!

DefiniteSparksfan. Great book! Couldn’t put it down

Love overcomes fear. Well written. A story of love and finding oneself. I love how this story shares mistakes that become stepping stones to success and redemption.

Definitely unexpected, sweet story. When I read some of the reviews of this book , I wasn’t sure how I would like it. It is so much more than a teenage love story as one wrote. Very heart wrenching and good story. Very much enjoyed.

The Wish. Another wonderful book from Nicholas Sparks. My most favorite author!

Two Thumbs Down. Depressing, predictable, wish I hadn’t purchased

The Wish. This may be the best one since “The Notebook”. It is a beautiful story, bringing both tears and joy, and blessing to my heart!

The wish. Such a wonderful story. Really hit home. Loved it!

My first Nicholas Sparks book. While I’m familiar with all the movies based on his books. This was my first read of his and oh my goodness. I ended up figuring out what was going to play out before I read it but even then was I not prepared for the way it was portrayed. Beautiful, tear jerking, passionate. I loved every minute of this book. I finished it in one day!

Amazing Read. I purchased this book a year ago when my life was falling apart. Though I have read many books written by Nicholas Sparks, this book put things in perspective in away nothing else did. It took me personally awhile to really dive into the book but once I finally opened up to possibilities, I found myself unable to put it down. I only wrote this review to thank the author for giving me this gift. Merry Christmas everyone.

Give it a chance. Trust me - just get through the beginning and you’ll very much enjoy it! It felt a little slow to me at first but you needed the storyline. The end had me crying for the characters - both happy and sad tears!!

The Wish. I did not guess the ending which is rare for me. This book brought so many feelings about my own life do yourself a favor and read this book.
