Awesome. I absolutely love Blake and Harlan’s story. Tanya is an amazing writer that creates beautiful relationships between couples, friends, and family. You will not be able to put this book down once you have started to read it.

Defender of Walls. This is your pretty typical modern romance dropped in a pre-industrial setting wearing a Party City costume. If you squint, the story seems loosely inspired by the Great Famine of 1315, albeit pushed forward, and England in 1327, in which a lot of creative liberties were taken. Despite this, nothing felt intrinsically medieval about this book. The author went the typical Hollywood route with zero research done on period dress, evidenced by loose hair (usually bound and often covered for modesty but also to keep it clean), waistcoats and combovers (wouldn’t be a thing for several centuries), lack of under layers etc. Nobles marrying farmers during a famine because “farmers had control over the food supply” and merchants as a starving class also trying to woo farmers for the same reason raises a lot of questions about the social, political, and economic systems in place, since that’s not how feudalism worked, that are never answered. Blake is largely your typical sharp-tongued female protagonist somehow taught weapons proficiency by her textile merchant father. The first half of the book is disappointingly just Harlan rescuing Blake in one way or another. The only remarkable thing she does is beat up tweens. It’s somewhat made up for when she does save Harlan in the second half, but then she goes back to more of the same. The drama around Harlan’s “betrayal” in Eda’s punishment felt overdrawn for anyone who’s seen Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest or Memoir’s of a Geisha. Similarly, Blake’s “I’m Spartacus” moment was kind of underwhelming because Spartacus already did it and better. Blake’s surprise didn’t make sense when the defenders assaulted Eda despite complying with their commands when they’ve been living under essentially police brutality. It’s also problematic that the solution presented is simply better training when the issue is systemic. The whole seizure of weapons also reeks of typical conservative talking points against gun control, which claim them lefties want to indiscriminately take away all your guns and ultimately rob people of their ability to survive and fight against oppressive government, which isn’t grounded in reality.

Fantastic!. Tanya Bird is a master of words, world building and romance. This book is no exception to her exceptional writing. If you’re looking for your next great romance, pick up Defender of Walls. You will not be disappointed.

Loved it. Wowza what a story..medieval dystopian Romance .Tanya Bird is one of my few go-to romance authors and i love the stories she writes. Loved the Defender of walls , i could not put the book down. I thought it was a wonderful blend of romance, tenderness, action and a fully rounded character story line. This story is about two characters Blake and Harlan ….Loved that Blake was so strong and i was invested in Harlan and her relationship development. Kept me on the edge of my seat as i wanted to know what would happen to them. Struggling with famine , heartache and staying alive, struggling to trust someone society says you should not, this story draws you in and you are so invested you have to see how it plays out. Thoroughly enjoyed it and looking forward to the next book.

Fantastic read. I have high expectations for the books I read. This book is great. I downloaded it and started reading that evening and couldn’t stop until early the next morning when I was done. Tanya Bird’s books generally do that to me. The love story between Blake and Harlan is one for the ages. I am glad this is the first book in the series so hopefully I’ll get glimpses of how their story progresses in future books. Get this book. You won’t be disappointed. In fact, find all of her books and get your hands on a copy. I will forever be a Tanya Bird fan and you will be as well. Her books make you want to read more. And then reread them. Believe me.

A heart wrenching story of loyalty and forbidden love.. You fall in love right away with the characters Tanya created in this story. Each one is so individual and takes hold of a little piece of your heart. Beautifully written and keeps you anticipating each new page. Loved it so much. I can’t wait for the next book to come out in this series.

You won’t want to put it down!. 5/5 stars is not enough to express my total and complete adoration of this book. As a first time reader of Tanya Bird’s, I can assure you, I will be back for more. This story was real and raw. Something I admire. It was harsh, yet so beautifully written. I guarantee you will fall in love with Commander Harlan Wright. He’s strong and fierce, all assets when it comes to guarding the wall and his newfound love. Blake Suttone, the heroine we all NEED. Strong, determined, convicted, skilled, and witty. She constantly sacrifices her needs for those that she loves. Starvation and famine plague the borough, but Tanya’s exceptionally well written story will having you scarfing the pages down and going back for more. Honestly, I didn’t stop reading it until I finished, which happened to be at 2:02 AM. Needless to say, I went to work extremely tired, but with no regret at all. It is definitely worth the read, I guarantee you won’t want to put it down.

Oh the angst!. Huge thanks to Tanya Bird for this eARC in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book in Ms. Bird's new Kingdom of Walls series. This follows our main characters the fiery, Blake Suttone, and the strict, Commander Harlan Wright, as they try to manage forbidden love between class divides and starvation. As many know, I am a passionate lover of strong female protagonists and this book did not disappoint. Blake and the rest of Suttone sisters are forces to be reckoned with. Blake fights for the rights of her people and doesn't let even the love of her life stand in her way. She is a warrior through and through! This novel was fast paced, angsty, relatable, dark and romantic. Harlan is easily a new book boyfriend even though sometimes he can be infuriating. (In the best way, of course.) I rooted for this couple from the very beginning and the ending left me craving the next book in the series. Overall, 5 stars from me! I can't wait to read the other books to come in this series. If you like romance and period novels, this is for you!

Beautiful story. When I review a book, I judge in three categories. Do I enjoy it so much I can’t put it down? Do I get so caught up in the story I think about it when I have to put it down? Am I sad when it ends? Defender of Walls fits every one! I was so excited to read this book by Tanya Bird, her The Companion series, are by far my favorite books ever. ThIs is not a book with a strong male figure coming to the rescue of a weak, whiny female. These characters are both fierce and strong in different ways. Ms. Bird brings them together beautifully. She is talented enough to even work a bit of humor into an otherwise grim situation. This book is to be part of a series, but it could be a standalone book. It comes full circle. It doesn’t leave the reader hanging, waiting for the next book in the series. It will however leave you wanting more, thinking about more and not wanting it to end. Check!

Tanya Bird can write no wrong. This book is great. Everything that Tanya writes is amazing. Just get it already! The story will definitely pull at your heart strings. It shows the ugliness of the human heart at times but also the strength of the human spirit. She keeps romance hot but clean. Don’t know how she manages both but she does. It does have the f bomb, I think three times, so heads up if your opposed to that. Great job Tanya!!

Defender of walls, defender of hearts !. I was sucked in from the get go , with a ballsy female lead looking after her family and a ballsy male who falls for her . It’s nice to see a book that isn’t just a damsel in distress , swoon and it’s over . These two fight their way to each other and for each other and take glimpses of what life could be . Loved it from the get go and couldn’t put it down . Tanya has again produced a book that is exceptional in its entirety . Oh special mentions to the animals in her books who always make me laugh out loud

I have read every book written by Tanya Bird and I have not been able to put any one of them down once started. The Companion Series, the Gladiator Series and now the Kingdom of Walls Series. Best one yet!. Another master piece of story telling from Tanya.. I think you are my most favourite author. Story has you from the first page. Fantastic characters I just loved all of it! Thrilling & Chilling. This first book in the series Kingdom of Walls is another action packed drama from Tanya Bird! This lovely author has you gripped from the first chilling chapter to the edge of your seat action throughout to beautiful conclusion to a beautiful book. Blake is beautiful, feisty and stupidly brave! She will do anything for her family and those that she loves even face warriors 10 times bigger than herself! Harlan is loyal, strong and rigid, yet he is drawn to one feisty merchant girl and his life is changed forever! Read the book to find out how these star crossed lovers defy norms and trust their love to triumph above all else. You will laugh, you will certainly cry and you will rejoice along with them! Cannot wait for the next story in the series!

Defender of Walls. amazing. Wow Tanya you have done it again. Defender of walls is amazing. From the first to last page it keeps you glued, I didn’t want to put it down. The story of Harlan and Blake is spellbinding. I feel like I have been on a roller coaster with my emotions so happy and high one moment than crying the next. This love story has it all. They should never have met but I am so glad they did. Tanya has a way of making you feel as if you are there in the story with them. I can’t wait for the next book.

Poor Storytelling. This story would have been better if it were some kind of fantasy in a medieval setting or maybe some kind of alternate history. There was barely any explanation as to what was “dystopian” about it. A dystopia is what happens AFTER the collapse of a modern society. This was hardly that in fact later its indicated it’s the 1300s so its definitely more Alt History than dystopian. The character were ok but I was always waiting for something better to happen than a boy king throwing a hissy fit (which only come in the LAST third of the book). Basically I was just left wanting more. Or for everyone in the Merchant Borough to just jump on a boat and leave. I mean there was land outside the walls wasn’t there!? It wasn’t all ocean, so Why couldn’t they hunt there for food? The Meridian part of the TV show/comic W.I.T.C.H. had a better plot and made infinitely more sense. And would have been a better basis for a story like this. This was just a really nothing to get excited about. It’s a good story in theory but was POORLY executed.

Can wait for next installment. If you loved the Companion series like I did, this makes another fabulous read. Action, drama woven together with a delicious romance - Tanya builds very lovable characters.
