Tao Te King (auch Daodejing, Tao te-ching) ist das Buch vom Sinn und Leben - eine der ersten taoistischen Schriften, und einer der Grundpfeiler des Taoismus. Neben dem Konfuzianismus und Buddhismus ist der Taoismus eine der "Drei Lehren", die China maßgeblich prägten. Auch über China hinaus haben die "Drei Lehren" wesentlichen Einfluss ausgeübt.
Die Entstehungszeit des Tao Te King wird auf das 4. bis 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. geschätzt, die Umstände lassen sich historisch genau nicht rekonstruieren - es ranken sich deshalb allerlei Legenden darum, die literarischen Stoff auch in der westlichen Welt abgegeben haben. Das Buch ist in Entstehungsgeschichte und Bedeutung vergleichbar mit der Bibel oder dem Koran. Es ist eine Reise ins Innerste Chinas - und zu sich selbst.
