Januar 1973 vor gerade einmal drei zahlenden Zuschauern im PopcornClub in New York statt. Jedes Bandmitglied hatte eine eigene, festgelegte Schminkmaske. Die Gesichter waren weiß geschminkt, die aufgemalten Masken waren schwarz oder silbern. Peter Criss war wie eine Katze maskiert, Paul Stanley hatte einen blutrot angemalten Mund und einen schwarzen Stern um das rechte Auge. "Natürlich wollten wir die Leute schockieren mit diesen wilden Farben. Und bekamen genau die Aufmerksamkeit, die wir wollten," erzählt Paul Stanley in diesem einzigartigen Buch über die Anfangsjahre von KISS. Er und Gene Simmons erzählen freimütig teils absurde Anekdoten, dazu kommen Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Slade, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Mott the Hoople, The New York Dolls, The Ramones, Suzi Quatro und viele andere Weggefährten der frühen Jahre gebührend zu Wort. Co-Autor Ken Sharp beleuchtet dabei auch die Rolle ihrer Manager Bill Aucoin und Neil Bogart, Chef von Casablanca Records. Sie halfen mit, das Image durch "kissing contests", Plateaustiefel, Pyrotechnik und fremdartige, geradezu außerirdisch anmutende Kostüme zu festigen.
